I've never really seen either. For many years my newsgroup access came
from my ISP and they always included newsgroups*. That began going
away several years ago so now almost everyone has to have an ISP and a
separate provider for Usenet or do like most have done and abandon
Usenet. <sigh>

*Newsgroup access wasn't always from the ISP's own servers. sometimes
it was provided by another company such as Highwinds (UGH!) or ??? but
it was seamless for the users.
I'm going to go out on a long limb and make a guess that you guys who
haven't seen NSP (or USP) probably aren't very active in your NSP's
support newsgroup.

Yep! As I said, "although it's easy to build a computer (it's not
much more than plugging the components together; similar to
plugging together stereo components, but with a computer they are
inside the case) ..."

But as I also said at the end of that same sentence, "... it isn't
always easy to troubleshoot any problems you have building it."
And that's the main reason I don't do it.
I have a better reason and that's cost. I built all my own computers
until the last two when I discovered upgrading required a new
motherboard, new memory and new CPU to bring my box up to current
standards. I found a 'refurb' HP at frys.com for $500 which was less
than the price of CPU, MB and memory plus I got a new, larger HD and a
new DVD burner plus a warranty! An hour or so the burn the recovery
CDs and then the time required to format the HD and install my own OS
and software and I was up and running with a new machine that met
current specs (my old box was around 3 years obsolete.)

Best reason not to build your own? Between refurbs available from
Ebay, Frys, NewEgg, etc. etc. it's just plain cheaper!

Determine your CPU, amount of memory desired, etc. and start
searching...

Did Windows Mail have the Live integration features of
Windows Live Mail? WLM will integrate with Skydrive to let
you store files up there, like putting your attachments up
there and linking to them in your e-mail. That way, you
don't assault your recipients with huge-sized e-mails that
consume their bandwidth and disk space and they can decide
whether or not to go get your attachment.
That's what DropBox is for.

Interesting - and cool.

But be warned - that kind of experience has a significant
risk of turning a poor innocent kid into a tinkerer.
.......and the possible side effect to become a Linux user?

(A reference to a "tinkerer".)

However, I digress.....

I just purchased an under-dash 8-track player, although
admittedly, it is for my classic 1965 van. Tapes are still
easy to find, online, or fleamarkets/yard/garage sales.

Yup! It died Friday evening. My research was to find a place

Unfortunately, the colour I like is no longer generally available
(beige). I dislike lightsucker, er, black.

Interesting how different we are in that respect. If you're talking
about a desktop, I don't care at all what color it is. There are three
desktops in this room (mine, my wife's, and a Windows Home Server).
All three are under desks and partially hidden. I can see that two of
them are beige and one black, but if you had asked me when I wasn't in
the room, I would have been lucky to guess two out of the three
correctly.

Even with laptops, where I would expect most people to care much more
about the color than with desktops, I hardly care at all (as long as
it isn't pink).

I don't know if my NSP (or USP) even has a support group, if they do
I'm probably not very active in it! <G>

How can anyone claim to be educated who doesn't watch Jerry Springer?

Nope. I've never used it, and have never even heard of it. I

I've never paid for the use of any news server.
Then you must be using eternal-september.org. It's the only other
news service that I can find in your headers, but I wasn't sure if it
was a reflection of my own service which is also eternal-
september.org. They require a valid email address to sign up for an
account.

The first time you connected to eternal-september.org Agent required
you to enter a password.

My desktops -- I have two -- are on my physical desktop. Since
they are not hidden away, colour is a bit more of a concern. I amnot
that fussy. I do not want something garish or especially noticeable.
Lightsucker fails on the second point (for me).
Even with laptops, where I would expect most people to care much more
about the color than with desktops, I hardly care at all (as long as

Lightsucker is too dark for my taste, and thus, the name. As to
pink, I love the colour. I rarely wear a top that is not a shade of
pink. The polo T I have on right now is a colour called cherry
blossom. It is a medium pink. Pink goes well with quite a few
colours: brown (of similar darkness), whites and off-whites, and what
I call off-blacks (like charcoal).

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

That's an odd restriction of the meaning of the word...
However, I digress.....

Hey! Lucky guy!

I never would have guessed that the drives and tapes could be found and
would still work.

I have some elderly audio cassettes, some of which seem to be jammed,
and two players, one of which works a little and the other not at all
:)

I have a new cheap USB cassette player that works on the unjammed
cassettes, at least.

Gene E. Bloch

You say "most," but as far as I can remember, I've never used any that
has done that. I use four news servers at the moment, and over the
years I've used about half a dozen (or more) others.

It's possible that I just have forgotten, but I don't think I've
forgotten ten or twelve.
You may have forgotten ten or twelve...

I have had to provide a valid address to most or all of the servers I've
used recently so that they can send me credentials...

Before recently, I also may have forgotten a bit :)

Gene E. Bloch

I hope you both know I didn't mean it as a bad thing, which is why I
also called it useless information. The only time it'll hurt you is
possibly in a trivia game, so you're ok.
Nah, I didn't think you meant it that way.

But speaking of trivia games, it's a major reason that I won't submit a
puzzle solution to Will Shortz's contest on NPR Weekend Edition Sunday.

I guess that makes it a bad thing :)

How can anyone claim to be educated who doesn't watch Jerry Springer?
<G>
It's amazing how often when I am testing some part of my TV setup, I
catch Maurie. It seems the channel I watched the previous night's news
on carries him for an hour before lunch and another after lunch.

No, I am not the father of my wife's sister's child! Or whatever...

G

Gene E. Bloch

If the world ends that day and we're all killed, I'm going to come
looking for you to get an explanation. Something tells me I have a
logic problem there, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Well, I will have all of my excuses ready, so I'm not worried.

Or the included disk space for your personal web page provided by your
ISP.

Or use a free online file storage service (e.g., MediaFire, Megashares,
MegaUpload, Sendspace, Spread-it, TransferBigFiles).

But those and Dropbox are not *integrated* services with the e-mail
client. I can (and have) use aDrive to store my backup files for a free
means of doing "cloud" backups but obviously that's not really a backup
client doing the uploads to store its backup files. I can do it but
it's a manual operation versus an integrated function.

OK, if you say so I'll believe you. But either your memory is much
better than mine or I started using eternal-september well before you
did. ;-)

You may have forgotten ten or twelve...

Maybe. I suffer from CRS syndrome and can't remember what it is that
I've forgotten. <g>

But I'm almost sure I didn't have to do it for *all* the servers I've
used.

Jerry who? <g>

Actually, I've heard the name, but I know nothing about him, have
never seen him, and don't even know what he looks like.
