Does Microsoft still do outlook express for windows 7.........?

Of course, I'm of the mind that not even coming close to OE or WM is a
big plus :)
We are of the same mind! It has always boggled me that people would
willingly use OE, and I'll say the same for WM if it's anything like
OE.

Only some of the free ones. I can't see paying for one I may just uninstall
after trying. Do you know of any that are very similar to OE or WM? None I
tried even came close. I'm not into fancy filtering etc.
Nearly all of them have a free trial. I'm not aware of one that
doesn't, so you wouldn't be out anything but your time.

Which I will not do, especially not knowing if it'll work or not. I'm
not that wealthy.
If your computer meets the requirements for running MS Virtual Machine, and
if you then upgrade to Win-7 Pro and if you download and install the XP Mode
software into the virtual machine, it will work.

OE will be installed when you install XP and you can do all your email and
newsgroups from OE.

This message posted from a Win 7 machine in XP Mode using Outlook Express.

Hello, I want to know if microsoft did put out an email program for
windows 7 64 bit? I tried outlook 2001, but found it bulky and a lot
of functions I'd never would use. I just want a simple Microsoft email
program like outlook express 6 TIA

No, microsoft rely on Live Mail now. I have converted to Thunderbird,
it works well for mail [though the auto set-up is pants] but lacks
functionality for usenet [it won't even combine multi-posts]. Still it
is free.

I've already done that several times. All I get is the same "can't load
the MSOE.dll" error. Or it shows in Task Manager that WM is running but
it's not visible. Where it's running I have no idea. How did you get
around the MSOE.dll error?
Did you do it like this?

On the Vista PC open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files and copy
the Windows Mail folder to your USB stick. Pop the USB stick into your
Windows 7 PC
and copy the Windows Mail folder to the same location (C:\Program Files).
Once in place open the folder hold down the Ctrl key then click and drag
and drop a copy of the winmail.exe icon
onto the desktop to create a shortcut.

My fault for the confusion. I meant OE and WindowsMail, not WLM. I have
that and hate it so haven't been using that computer.

I didn't care for Thunderbird for mail or news. For one I couldn't send
pictures with TBs email, and for Usenet, it was really the pits. It's
not simple and easy to use like OE or WM.
I've never had a problem sending pictures via Thunderbird and since I
don't do binaries it has worked sufficiently well for me for Usenet. I
also like the fact that the program isn't tied to the operating system
so that if I one day wanted to switch to a Mac I wouldn't have to learn
a new mail/news program.

I admit the new account wizard for e-mail is problematical in that it
opts for an IMAP set-up first and you may have to jump through a few
hoops if you want a POP set-up.

No one program suits everyone's needs/wants.

Yes, I was aware of that - I just wanted to flog the dead horse :)

Perhaps you can explain how we can hack OE or WLM into W-7 to where it
will work. I followed all the steps and it wont open in W-7 although
Task Manager says it's running. It runs but it's no visible.
Well Yes, it is being done, but realize Outlook Express latest version was
what Vista used, and it was just called Windows Mail (Not Live Mail - WLM)
Windows Mail is Outlook Express with a few added features

The great thing is Windows Mail is already installed on Win7, but they just
didn't activate it.

Anyway, Windows Mail (again not WLM) is Outlook Express updated, and it can
be re-instated on Windows7

And so yes in essence you can have Outlook Express on Win7

Instructions how to do it here on post 317:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5481-windows-mail-32.html#post533107

and/or on post 1 (which got its info from 317)

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5481-windows-mail-32.html#post533107

I followed this quite closely when it started but haven't kept up with it
and reading a little today I think SP1 may have casued a problem with those
that had it installed, after reading a little it seems you have to install
SP1 first as per post #993 talks about here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5481-windows-mail-100.html#post1309124

Anyway, it's possible, but takes an effort

So it's been a while since you tried TBird. In the latest release the
new account wizard has been revised a little and it gives you a choice
if your email server can handle IMAP or POP mail.

Just a suggestion but why not sell them on Craigslist or Ebay? XP is
still very popular.
When XP first came out, one could buy additional upgrade licenses which
did not include an install CD. That's what I have, 1 complete upgrade
package, and 2 upgrade licenses that don't have a CD. I don't know how
well selling the licenses without an install CD would go because I won't
sell the upgrade package that does have a cd.

The actual OS is available in multiple places and from multiple
sources, including as a direct download from microsoft.com, so I don't
think you'd have a problem selling just the license key. It won't be
everyone's cup of tea, but for people who have or can get the OS and
just need the license it would be perfect.

Hi Lee......glad to see I am not the only one who detests that program.
Did you have to uninstall WLM 2011 first and then install 2009?? I will
have to do that, but will wait till I am 100% sure of how to do it. It
seems simple enough, but I can't remember where to download 2009.

Cheers......Heather
Actually I found WLM 2011 so messed up my machine I reformatted and did a
fresh install of windows. Relic gave me the URL to download the WLM 2009
version which works well. WLM 2011 taught me to no longer update or upgrade
programs every time a new version comes out. If it works well stay with the
present version and forget upgrading all the time.

Again Relic and a few others have posted links where you can download WLM
2009.

That's what message filters are for. If you had asked on a newsgroup,
someone would have been more than happy to tell you how to do it. The
easiest would be to highlight the message in the message list pane, then
click Message - Create Filter From Message. There you can specify to
delete, mark as read and a number of other options.

Well I never saw that and at the time Alias and Frank and Big Steel and a
few others where so active this newsgroup was unreadable so I went back to
WLM where I know how to use kill filters. I don't care about Linux so I
wanted to kill file all Alias and Frank noise and WLM 2009 does that for me.

Would you like to url that? ;-)
Argh, I don't have the links handy, but I believe they are on technet
or msdn, something like that. Maybe someone will chime in with the
info. Either way, it's not like you're getting something for nothing.
You still need a license key, AFAIK.

MSDN subscriptions are for developer use only....not for daily use as
the primary OS.

Well, at least you gave it a fair shake. ;-)

Or not.
I have been using Thunderbird since v1.5 and Netscape before that. And I
still dislike it. :-(

My big beef with Thunderbird (and all non-MS readers) is the lack of
show (only) replies to my messages (CTRL-H).

Sure you can sort of fake it a bit by setting up a filter to mark any
thread you posted in as watched. But you can only see unread watched.
You can't see just threads you posted in whether read or unread.

Well I have wasted many years trying to get TB, Agent, XNews, Forte,
Dialog, etc. to do something really simple. Yet none of them can.

That is to show only replies to my posts like OE does (CTRL-H). I can't
believe other news reader programmers all overlook this view!
