Does Microsoft still do outlook express for windows 7.........?

Not necessarily, you can always go with a third party virtual machine
software like VMWare Player or VirtualBox. Only problem is that you'll need
a licensed copy of Windows XP to use with the virtual machine software.
For Bill's edification: the VM's are free, but of course Win XP isn't.

I was lucky - I had an unused version of XP lying around, so I recouped
what was originally wasted money :)

It would probably be cheaper and preferable to buy the Anytime Upgrade
to upgrade the Home Premium build to Professional.

I also hate Thunderbird. I couldn't find a way when I used it to
killfile anyone. So I went back to the WLM 2009 version which is not
messed up in the newsgroup department.
It's called filtering, and it works great.

Know what you mean... I have 3 XP Home licenses just sitting around
collecting dust...

If Windows 7 won't do it on its own, you always have WinXP mode
as an alternative environment to use.

I have no idea, what programs will or won't work with that. So
it's just a theory.

Buying an Anytime Upgrade to bring your Windows up to the version
that will run WinXP Mode, basically doubles the money Microsoft
is getting. So this isn't typically "free". For example, my new
laptop doesn't have a sufficient version so I can try that. I'd
basically be paying for an OS twice if I were to upgrade.
So in effect, you're "buying" a copy of WinXP, without knowing
whether it will solve your problem or not.

Which I will not do, especially not knowing if it'll work or not. I'm not
that wealthy.

Well if you're using Windows 7 Professional or higher you can always use
the OE that's in XPMode.
This is Home Premium. I get the same error so many others get when trying to
open WM in W-7. MSOE.dll can't be loaded.

I *did* have to blow the dust off my old license before installing it
:)

Only some of the free ones. I can't see paying for one I may just uninstall
after trying. Do you know of any that are very similar to OE or WM? None I
tried even came close. I'm not into fancy filtering etc.
Of course, I'm of the mind that not even coming close to OE or WM is a
big plus :)

WLM is the successor to OE and of course it can be used on W7...
Sorry for the confusion. My fault. I meant OE and WM, not WLM on W-7.

I think you're a little confused on names. Windows Live Mail (WLM) does
work on Windows 7, it's Windows Mail (WM) that doesn't.
Yes I was, thank you. It was WM and OE I meant. :)

Since when has Windows Mail not worked on Windows 7?

All you need is a Vista PC and a USB memory stick to copy
the Windows Mail folder to.
I've already done that several times. All I get is the same "can't load the
MSOE.dll" error. Or it shows in Task Manager that WM is running but it's
not visible. Where it's running I have no idea. How did you get around
the MSOE.dll error?

If by WLM you mean Windows Live Mail, you can use it on Windows 7. You
just have to download it. As for OE and WM (Windows Mail for Vista) I
assume MS didn't think it worth the time, effort and money to try to make
old products work with a newer operating system.
My fault for the confusion. I meant OE and WindowsMail, not WLM. I have that
and hate it so haven't been using that computer.
I've been using Thunderbird happily for a very long time, a natural
progression from Netscape Communicator (although I've also checked out OE,
WordPerfect's Mail program, and Evolution over the years).
I didn't care for Thunderbird for mail or news. For one I couldn't send
pictures with TBs email, and for Usenet, it was really the pits. It's not
simple and easy to use like OE or WM.

The only copy of XP I have are the disks I got from HP when I bought the old
XP PC. No one gives the plain MS disks like those bought in the stores
anymore. Wait, I'm not sure if I tossed them when the machine "died" and
couldn't be revived. I'd have to search the office.

But there is no guarantee WM would work on the Professional version either
even with VMWare Player or VirtualBox. I certainly don't need or want all
the other things that come with that upgraded version.

Just a suggestion but why not sell them on Craigslist or Ebay? XP is still
very popular.

I guess I please too easily, and I settled on one without testing
lots of them.

Years ago, I used to read a lot of news without posting, and back
then, you used to download and compile newsreaders, if you wanted
one. Some of the newsreaders I evaluated back then, didn't even
have threading. Occasionally, something would break in the newsreader,
like a manifest constant would need to be changed to keep the thing
working.

Being able to download a free newsreader executable now, that "just works"
and requires no effort from the user, is sheer luxury. And I don't
need filtering, scoring, killfiles, multi-part posting reassembly -
all I need is the ability to read and write and that's plenty.
As a result, I'm still using Thunderbird 2 (bugs and all).

For my email client, on my "official" email account I'm using a client
which is more than ten years old, and it doesn't know how to preview
attachments or display pictures in an email. All you can do in it, is
"detach" any items which aren't text and store them for examination
externally. It also doesn't parse or handle HTML. It's very close
to a "bare metal" client. And I'm pretty happy with that one too.
Even paid money for it :) I'm just amazed it still works, and that
I still have a setup I can run it on. I need to fire up a second
computer to use that. I have other email accounts, web mail based,
but they're not as much fun. With the "bare metal" client, I
never have to worry about clicking on anything within the email
tool. As hardly anything can happen.

I don't know anything about WM and Vista, but OE would work on Win 7
if you ran it in a VM or in XP Mode. I don't think there's any
question or doubt about that.
