Thanks. I didn't remember exactly, but that sounds right to me.
I don't trust my memory as much as I did when I was a young kid of 75
but I do know I used QuoteFix with Outlook 2003 and when I went to
Office 97 I went back to using Pegasus Mail as an email client (after a
flirtation with Thunderburp) so possibly my memory still works, just
not all the time!

LOL! How old are you now? In a few more months I'll be "a young kid of
75."

Notice how much harder your post with WLM is to follow quotes. Or
actually a complete lack of them. "-->" is not a standard quoting
character. (Oh wait! Those are on the *new* content!) <lol>

Thanks for trying.
I gave up trying to read his post...

It's lunch time here and I haven't eaten yet, so perhaps it's just that
I've gotten a little bit crabby :)

I'm enjoying this "Rondo in News Major" by Zaphod Beeblebrox :)

:)

Personally I prefer the Mozart composition (as recovered by Einstein),
but I'm not above a bit of improvisation given the opportunity...

How does one set a newsgroup response in Live mail so that the original
posting is indented or marked off with a symbol such as "<."

I can seem to find a way to do that.

Thanks,

WOW, what have I wrought?

I do long for Netscape Messenger (or whatever it was called).

Thanks for all of the answers.

Here is a version of WLM that still works,
WLM 2009, Version 14
http://g.live.com/1rewlive3/en/wlsetup-all.exe

It will quote posts properly (among other things), but doesn't include the
ribbon ui of the newer version. I continue to use V.14 on Windows 7 because
I can't stand 15. After installing 14, don’t get the Microsoft Update for
Windows Live Essentials. The update will re-install version 15.

Version 14 on Windows 7 is not supported by Microsoft, but it works just
fine for me, and I don't think anybody's kill-filed me because of it.

You will find that anytime WLM is mentioned on this newsgroup, there is
always a passionate debate about the merits, or lack thereof, of said
product. I don’t usually get involved with it, but I didn't see where
anybody actually said, "Here is a version of WLM that still works."

21 plus a few months. 670 is "a few" isn't it?
No. I suggest that instead of "a few", that you use "some". Say
it in an off-hand manner, possibly waving a hand as you do so.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

I'm still working on kill-filing you.

Of course I'm not serious...

To get almost serious - anyone who downloads v14 (and keeps the
installation file) could reinstall it after an update messes it up. That
obviously would be a PITA, but still, recovery is possible.

Me, I'd rather just use another newsreader.

Not when it comes to ages. <g>

I'm 21 plus 641 months (if I calculated correctly), so you are 29
months older than me.

RC White is slightly older than both of us. I think we're the three
oldest people here.

Highly unlikely (unless reverse engineering comes into play, the WLM API
was never made public)
Actually, in response to someone else about the loss of quoting in WLM
v15, I remembered that there was a utility to do the quoting that v15
removed. It's an AutoHotkey script so you have to install AutoHotkey to
use it plus *YOU* have to remember to run the AutoHotkey script when you
are composing a reply since it isn't an automatic action as would be an
add-on or extension added to WLM.

http://www.dusko-lolic.from.hr/wlmquote/

It's a bit of a kludge but perhaps better than nothing (where "nothing"
means having WLM users rarely ever manually edit their posts to properly
quote them before submitting them).
There is no Wave 5 version of WLM/WL Essentials (v15 is Wave 4, even the
latest QFE3)
Oops, jumped one level too far on the Wave family versioning.

I filter (not killfile but flag by colorizing) posts using v15, or
later, of WLM simply as a warning that anything past the starter post
may be difficult to follow. I get warned before stepping into the muck.

Hopefully the following regex works to flag on WLM users past v14:
!setcolor(purple;default) Header {^X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail (1[5-9]|1[0-9]{2,}|[2-9])}

Designed and intended:
1. for use with Hotmail accounts using DeltaSync (http protocol)
2. as an integrated option when desiring to send an email from WL Messenger
(negating the need to logon to the Hotmail/Live ID web UI)
3. as an integrated option when desiring to send photo email from WL Photo
Gallery (upload to SkyDrive to bypass the isp attachment and message size
restriction)
4. all the above and more

Nntp and mail (outside of Hotmail using DeltaSync) were never a priority nor
have they been since 2006.

Fyi...if you need 'quoting in email' use the Hotmail web UI <g>...they
forgot to remove it from that UI or use it before they do.

But there IS a "wrong" newsreader for everyone and that would be one
that can't quote properly, such as Windows Live Mail.

I'm with you completely. Windows Live Mail not only can't quote
properly in newsgroups, but it also can't quote properly in e-mail.
That makes it the wrong newsreader *and* the wrong e-mail client for
everybody.

" -->" - wysiwyg (forcibly)

Crabby is ok.

Lol..I could have done my usual top post but VanguardLH (around almost as
long as I) covered a lot of ground thus inline (regardless of lack of '<')
made more sense. His response indicated it (my post) achieved the intended
results. Whether anyone else read or critiqued it, maybe or maybe not..not
going to worry about it.

Hi, Ken.

Age before beauty? I could argue the point about best-looking - but I
won't. ;<)

I'm only 76 (until July). Our mutual friend Jim P. is a couple of years
older (and better-looking) than us, but I haven't seen him in this NG.

I stopped claiming to be the oldest MVP when I met a couple of guys in their
80's - and at least one past 90 (but that was online only, never met him in
person).

And I pity folks who use age as their excuse for refusing to learn new
things! Loss of hearing, fading eyesight and memory, and other problems
that come with age are legitimate, but not just age itself. I started up
this learning curve the day I was born and I expect to be on it until the
day I die. 'Nuff preachin' - for now. ;<}

I actually find it sort of amusing how serious some people are about this.
I use what I like, but try not to screw-up any threads, lest I incur the
wrath of the newsreader gods, and don't really care what anybody else uses.

If a thread does get fubar because of a certain reader, then I'll just quit
following it. Nothing that anybody posts (including myself, of course) is
so important that I feel I MUST read the thread. It's the low-stress way to
browse the news :)

I did have to uninstall 15 and reinstall 14 at one time because of an
unintended update, and the nice thing about it was all the messages and
settings were still intact.
