Windows 7 Freese up

I have been also having issues with Win7 just locking up. It just happened a few min.'s ago when browsing a site with video.
Video seems to be the trigger to a lock up.
I have a 2 month old Dell studio 15, and of course Dell has been less than helpful.
I have checked and no updates or patches are available for my video card or any other compensates.
Heck, it's a brand new system.
Any ideas?

Nearly all internet video is FLV or Flash based video. Flash app has been causing some problems lately for a lot of users. Maybe updating it will help.

Same thing happens to me, the videos will load fine most of the time, but there are times when they freeze. I normally use Firefox, but have an IE tab that allows me to switch to IE when needed. It doesn't make much difference, if fact it worsens the problem most of the time. I've updated everything with no improvement. Even tried Beta versions of Flash with no success. Perhaps that's why Steve Jobs dumped Adobe Flash and replaced it with another product on some of his systems. I wished that I had saved the article, I would have tried it out myself, had I knew this was the problem.

same freezing problems as everyone else. Asus MOB,home built,my 3rd one, win7 pro, core i7,4gig Ram). Tried all the usual remedies Ive seen over the past 8 months or so. Did turn off standbye/sleep mode entirely and have not had a freezing issue since. This has been about 2 weeks and I was rarely getting through 1 week. Will keep you posted. Love this new forum, lots of good info

You might want to start a new thread, that way we can you can start fresh. Did you try backing up and reinstalling Windows? Does this same problem occur when you are running another OS? I help you further but I think you should start another thread under the "Windows 7 support" catagory. Ya this site is awsome :)

Starting a new thread would probably be an admin's decision or a moderator's.

At one time there was about 8-10 different "Windows 7 Freezes" threads.

Became too cluttered since nearly all the fixes were similar.

BTW, this is the Windows 7 Support category!

You're right, there were a bunch of those "freezing" threads, I mean a ton of them. Now, it seems like a lot of printing threads. A lot of them are 10+ years old.

PROBLEM SOLVED...for now anyway, problem was Linksys WMP 100 Wireless adapter. Went to device manager, choose to update driver, choose the option to select yourself, choose Atheros AR5008, generic driver from chipset manufacturer for the adapter, reinstalled router, straight from cd (need to wipe the router to factoy defaults and hook up manual install), but it is RUNNING LIKE A CHARM!!! Have heard others on here work with other linksys adapters as well!!! I hope this helps, and that mine keeps working....

Hey, I've not long built a HTPC running windows 7 and I'm getting freezes too. I tried just about everything in this thread to no avail.

My symptoms are -> it hangs anywhere from a few seconds to minutes with the hard drive light on the whole time, but unlike some it always comes back I just have to wait for it.

Any help appreciated.

Hi All.
I just purchased my new notebook with preloaded windows 7 last January 2010. But it's did not give me any confidence of using it as it freezes a lot. It's very slow! Please help me fix it. I tried to follow disabling services in msconfig.exe. But nothing happened.
Thanks for helping...

Hi,

I haven't read all of your replies, because I found my solution to the problem almost halfway.
The freezing problem is mostly caused by your graphics card.
To check if this is so, you can browse to the 'device manager' and turn off your graphic card (in the section for your monitor).
Reboot and normally your pc doesn't freeze any more.

If it does, this reply isn't helpful for you.
If it doesn't, your graphics card IS the problem. Just download more recent drivers and hopefully your problem is solved...

I hope I helped some of you guys :)

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I changed the hard disk and did another install without updating any of the drivers. In other words its just using whatever drivers windows installed. So far so good. The question is, was it the hard drive? or the drivers? or some software which I haven't reinstalled yet.

Howdy Yall,
I'm having the same freezing issues. Its fairly random, but regular enough to be driving me up the wall. I never know when it will happen but its almost assured to happen at some point within an hour of launching any game I play. Star Trek Online, Mass Effect 2, WoW, Dragon Age. All of them and never at the same point each time.
As best I can tell I am fully updated on all drivers for everything. I have gone 1 by 1 down the device manager and used windows "update drivers" button.
I have specifically set it to Performance power mode, and turned everything to off or never in the advanced power options.
I have tried to flash the bios using the most recent bios I could find on ASUS website, but the BIOS flast utility always finds an error with the file I have downloaded (its been a different error two times, so I'm stuck with the motherboard as it came in the box.. incidentally claiming to be WIN 7 ready.
The only incompatibility I have found pouring over my manuals is that for 1333 DDR3 SDRAM made by crucial my MoBoard explicitly states it supports CAS timings of 9-9-9-24 and the RAM I have has timings of 7-7-7-21. I looked in BIOS and saw no way to adjust the timing values of the RAM. Also the MoBoard manual doesn't list a voltage to operate Crucial RAM so I have it set to AUTO in BIOS.
I'm nearly at my wits end here. I spent a pretty good amount of money looking for a nice, clean upgrade from my Vista 64 system, and so far I've got nothing but instability and frustration.
My system specs are as follows:
AMD Phenom IIx4 955 Black Edition @ 3.2 GHz
4.00GB Crucial DDR3 SDRAM (2x2GB)
Win 7 64 bit
ST3250410AS ATA Hard drive
WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1 Hard drive
2xATI Radeon HD 4770 (Cross-Fired)
ASUS DRW=24B1ST ATA DVD Drive
Merc Stealth Keyboard
Razar Mamba Mouse
HP Officejet Printer
SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card
ASUS M4A78T-E Motherboard.
700 Watt PSU
I've run windiag, no errors, I've reinstalled Win 7 I don't know how many times. I've updated every driver I know how to find. Still it randomly freezes.
This whole forum is full of folks who have had this same issue, can anyone help?
Very Respectfully,
~Bcfunder
