Tried a new approach...
Just rebooted with Workstation service enabled after repairing it with sfc /scannow in command line (after renaming the original wkssvc.dll to something else, because sfc /scannow didn't detect it as corrupt when I tried it before renaming the file).

No insta-freeze!

I'll report on freeze-less uptime as the counter goes up, but so far I think it actually worked!

Edit:
20 hours and counting with out any freezes since repairing the corrupt workstation service's wkssvc.dll file

My laptop freezes too. I don't think it's a problem with hardware (but it's my taught) because it's a brand new laptop and it came with an upgrade to windows 7
It has nothing from asus so that's definitely not the problem.

it's a dell vostro 1520
intel P8600 2.4GHz
4 GB DDR2 866MHz

hey guys

new here but been reading everything you've said.i've had the same problem for a few weeks now with no luck.what i've done now is the power management, the driver updates and i've also done a registry sweep along with a value change in the registry.lastly i removed AVG and installed ms security essentials.
so far so good.it used to freeze randomly every 10 to 20 seconds with me having to power down completely.its now been on for 3 hours after doing all of the above..hopefully this helps you out.
the only common piece of hardware i saw i had was an nvidia 8800 GTS.i can post the rest of my specs if needed.
windows 7 home premium 64 bit retail.

7 and a half hours and counting...still no freezing yet :) i think this has solved the problem..i'm leaning towards AVG being the main culprit.

Hey guys.

I installed the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate and I had this problem for almost two months. When I got connected to the Internet my computer froze up randomly. Sometimes seven times in an hour, sometimes once in a week, but it was there.
I knew it had something to do with my drivers. I tried to update my video card driver. I did but it was worthless because the problem was still there.
I googled and found a new software which detects any obsolete driver and updates them. I updated my Network card driver. The problem is totally solved now. It was the preinstalled network card driver of Windows 7 which caused the freezing.
I suggest you to download this software and try to update any obsolete driver of your computer specially the ones which are preinstalled.
You can download it here.
You need to register on RegistarMax website in order to use the software ( It uploads your data on the web and maintains a history of your logs)

I hope it works out for you as well :)

Thanks for info

I have just found this thread and have modified my Power plan setting to High Performance and after 1 hour no freezes which is great as usually it only lasted for a few minutes.

I remember seeing posts about the HDD activity LED being on constantly when you first boot your PC and nothing can be done on your PC for ages....

If this is happening to you try this

Click 'Run' type services.msc click Enter
Services window should open
Find "Automatic Updates" and click on it once to select.
Click 'Stop' Service option.
Right click and select Properties set Start - Automatic to either Manual or Disabled.
If Start option is not changed the Auto option resets next time you boot your PC and will try an find updates automatically.

4 days 12 hours (or 108 hours), uptime, with 2 proper reboots for installations and upadtes. So far no crashes and no freezes.

The only issue I've encountered since repairing the workstation service is that I can't change or leave my homegroup.
It doesn't matter much in my particular case, what with this machine being a desktop on a LAN, but for those of you on laptops I'd advise to remove any settings related to the service you'll be repairing before doing the repair.

BUT i still keep getting the Blue Screen warning and reboot RANDOMLY. is it the NVIDIA 9100 video driver (upgrade it 2 times) or is it CHKDSK dont see a fix for that yet. sill looking for a patch. I have a HP 4core 6720y

That's an Nvidia driver crash.
Take a look at this page:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1308961&page=15

Solutions suggested in that thread:
  • Set your RAM voltage and timings manually
  • Remove and re-insert the graphics card (could be seated badly)
  • try installing the drivers from the cd you got with the card or the computer (some people have said that newer drivers caused this issue for them)
  • It is possible that either your card, your motherboard, or both are defective and could be causing this... But I have no idea how you would go about verifying one or the other.
If you do try reinstalling the drivers, make sure to completely remove the old ones before installing the new ones (either manually or using some driver cleanup utility).

For now, what I'd go with first is booting into safe mode and removing the nvidia drivers completely, then installing the latest ones from nvidia. If that doesn't work, try the same method with the ones you got on the card's installation cd. If neither of those works, that would be the time to start messing around with the hardware settings.

Hope this helps.

My PC specs are found at this URL http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/?m=home&sn=100765370353 (except I have 6 gigs ram)
My freezing was fixed using Drivermax
I am posting my solution as a thanks to all the 7forum contributors for all the advice you posted and the many weeks spent on your site. I am hoping that my solution will help someone else "out there"

Hi I'm new to this forum and it's rly nice!

My problem is similar, I started of with 64 bit win 7 ultimate and it froze all the time, so I then changed it to 32 bit and it also froze, then I found this forum and in this thread it said change power supply options, I done that and changed it to high performance. After that it worked so fast! I got so cocky that I decided to install 64 bit again and put it on high power, but it still froze, lol.

I really want 64 bit to work and I'm not sure how this will happen. COME ON MICROSOFT! :D

Same problem : but mine freezes for about 3 minutes. Things i have noticed
-When i installed Win7 Ultimate 64bit it was working fine. done all my updates. still fine
-Installed all programs at once. ICQ, google chrome. Webroot Security essantials.
-Freezing started >.>
-Freezing occurs mostly on startup when i start ICQ and chrome before other things load
-have not touched power options, tested ram, cpu, hardware, dvd drives, SMART. all check out ok
-Possible problems: Weboort (will run without AV for a couple days), Check drivers, Check power management, and graphics card
