Win7 Backup Program

If you want a shortcut to the Backup and Restore function:
Control Panel(iconview) > Right-click backup and Restore icon > Create shortcut.
This will put the shortcut onto your Desktop.
Select the shortcut and drag it over the Start orb to pin it to the start menu.
Or use one of the "Pin to..." menu items?

Ok, step 1 - Control Panel(iconview)? Where do I get to that - I go
to Control Panel, right click on Backup and Restore, but nothing.
Where is this Control Panel(iconview)?

Thanks

As long as the desktop shortcut to Backup and Restore is not deleted, the shortcut/icon will remain as a pinned item on the Start
Menu.
- if one does not wish the item on the Desktop (many don't), another option would be to move the 'Control Panel created Desktop
shortcut for Backup and Restore' to a location (folder) on the All Programs menu (e.g. System Tools), then drag it to the Orb (to
add to the Start Menu)
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools

Note: A shortcut created for Backup and Restore (a Control Panel item) will not have the rt click (Pin to Task Bar and Start Menu
options).

On the other hand <g> one could make it a whole lot easier by just opening the item on the All Programs Menu
Orb > All Programs > Maintenance > Backup and Restore

....and drag it to the Orb to Pin it to the Start Menu

Thanks for the reply, but am a bit confused. When I go to Control
Panel/Backup & Restore, I do not see any option to create a shortcut,
just options to run the backup or restore files, but nothing to allow
me to create a shortcut. What am I missing?
Thanks again.

They really messed up the listing in Control Panel. It's a pain in the
ass, the way they have listed items alphabetically left to right and
then go down to the next line, etc. Why couldn't they have left a purely
alphabetic listing of the items top to bottom and continue the
alphabetic listing in the next column? But no, they had to change the
order of things just to be seen to have made changes. But these are
changes for the worse! In this respect the layout in Windows XP was far
more logical.--

change to Classic Start http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

I've got classic shell installed. In fact I just checked and found it
listed in "Everything". But still the items in Control Panel are listed
alpabetically Left to Right and continued on the next line. Not listed
top to bottom and continued in the next column which is the logical way.
Actually another friend complained the other day about this arrangement
of the items in Control Panel.--

change to "details" or make that panel narrower
Thanks. My first reaction was, "Why couldn't *i* think of that?" but
having tried it it's still not quite as logical a layout as in WinXP.
When you get a single column, it's just too long and loses its
practicality. But thanks all the same.--

Alphabetical by column is more logical than alphabetical by row? I
don't understand that.

I suppose both options should be supported so that you can have your
weird way and I can have my weird way.

Try scanning for something. It is faster to go down a column and
then to the next column than to scan row by row looking. Row-first
order is how telephone books are organised.

Sure.

out there. Type in 'Find people that have sex with goats that are on
fire' and the computer will ask, 'Specify type of goat.'" -- Rich Jeni

I scan across, then down. I read that way, too, so it comes naturally.

The main panel. Of Control Panel.

Exactly. Top to bottom. It's more natural and logical to scan columns
from top to bottom. That's how you scan birds, ain't it? Top to bottom!--

The point remains that backup software was created to save
disk space when it was expense -- which is no loner the case,
but the tradition still influences all backup software I have
seen.
+1 (These days, that means I aggree... right?)
Actual need seems to be:
1. Cloning C: with an app that can truly copy a bootable disk
(and can restore one on demand.)
CASPER
http://www.fssdev.com/

I have been using it for many years. Makes a Perfect Clone!
Absolutely NO SETTINGS have to be reset.
Again - A Perfect CLONE.
2. For all non-booting drives, any reliable file copier suffices.

I agree completely. It's not only more natural and logical, but most
important, it's faster, because your eyes have to change direction
only a few times rather than often.

Ah. I can read many characters without moving my eyes
horizontally. Scanning a column is just vertical motion until I find
a likely entry where I might have to read the rest. Thus, for me, a
columnar orientation is much faster.

I only know of him from this one quote. It is applicable to our
YYMV discussion here.

So what type of goat do you use? <BEG>
