I have the feeling the name "grasshopper" is going to appear in this
discussion soon (-:!
Hhhmm! Buddhism has a great deal in common with western moral
philosophies. Gautama and Socrates were almost contemporaries.

I got fed up with the multitude of updates and just turned the damn
updating thing off.
That wasn't a good decision. Your system may or may not have a
problem, but nothing good comes from turning updates off.
Monthly updates would be fine. Even quarterly.
But 4 times a day? IMO, that is spyware at work.
Monthly updates would be close to worthless. Quarterly updates would
be even less beneficial.

On the other hand, one might ask why Win 7 is full of holes. I often get
8 fixes at time and I receive at least one per day. I have my Win 7 for
6 months now and I bet that means they had at least 200 holes to plug
and still going strong. This suggests what? ;-)

Heh, heh! To me it suggests that MS is fighting desperately against a
large number of people who are intent on either 1) Ruining my computer
or 2) Gaining access to my information. Hackers never stop trying to
get in so the defenses must be continually fortified. Even the much-
vaunted OS X isn't immune to attack.

That is strange. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and I get a few
updates/fixes monthly on patch Tuesday, but rarely anything else. The
only thing I get daily is a definition file update for Microsoft Security
Essentials.

You can ask that question, but it won't change my advice to leave
automatic updates enabled.

It suggests to me that you're not using the Custom option which allows
you to see exactly what each update is.

I run Win7 Home Premium, and I get about the same. I have lots of MS
stuff too; Office suite, C++ Basic package, Silverlight, Works and more.

I agree- I got 6 on 7/12, 3 on 6/29, 17 on 6/14 (including MS Office,
Silverlight, etc.), 1 on 5/25, etc., etc. As you can see, they aren't even
always weekly, but sometimes 2 weeks between updates. (I have mine set to
Notify before installing. I like to see what I'm getting before I get it
-) )

Please don't use Windows Live Mail for newsgroups. It screws up the
quotes, as it did above. (You didn't write the first paragraph, but
it makes it look as though you did.)

I don't see it that way at all. Windows 7 is *not* full of holes; in
fact there are fewer holes than in older versions of Windows.

The people who write malware are constantly coming up with techniques
and new security threats based on those techniques. I think it's
*great* that Microsoft is constantly monitoring these new threats and
updating their software to be abreast of them.

Think of it as being similar to anti-virus software. If it weren't
continually being updated, it would soon turn out to be useless.

It suggest that you're getting updates for many things other than Windows 7,
or that your updates for Windows are continually failing and retrying. My
last update for Win7 was July 13. Before that it was June 28, and June 16
before that. You get at least one per day? Name the 14+ you've gotten in
the last 2 weeks.

I suspect he won't be able to name them. This whole thread reeks of a

Probably because he's already made more money than 5 generations of Gates'
could spend LOL!! Maybe Obama can convince him to help with the national
debt so I can keep my Social Security :-(

There is trouble in the wind for you. Why don't you ask for corporations
to pay their fair share in taxes?

I have always asked that, through my vote and my representatives. (To be
fair, Microsoft is a corporation.) I think everyone should pay their fair
share, no matter what their income. With all the tax umbrellas that seem
lean towards the upper income wage earners, it'll never happen. Hasn't
happened in my 65 years, and isn't likely to happen, even if I lived another
65 years. I don't mind if someone wants to contribute to a charity of their
choice, but I do mind paying you back out of my taxes to do it. I have
charitable contributions of my own, but not near enough to benefit me other
than the fact that it feels good to do it. (I realize there are many other
examples before everyone starts slamming me on this one.)

That was my thoughts exactly.

The only update I get every day is the new MSE update.
