Today I had a message from my Win 7 computer

Recovery Backup Wizard:

Your computer uses a hard-drive based recovery process. You can back up
your recovery process now to USB stick or DVD, in case you need to
reinstall Windows in the future. Your options may differ based on your
computer.

Recovery Backup Now.

Create your Recovery Backup Now.
on DVD or USB stick.

I clicked on that and a window opened with header:
Control Panel > System and Security >Backup and Restore.

Next was: Backup or restore your files.
Backup: Windows backup has not been set up.

I clicked on the link 'Set up backup.'

Next a window popped open with : The backup application could not start
due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x80080005)

What a Win 7!!!!!!, only six months old and ready for the scrap heap :)

TIA

Do you trade in your car when the ash tray is full?

No, but I'd not be pleased if the oil light came on after 6 months, and
I then found the sump drain plug or oil filler cap was welded shut.

Not particularly apposite, but still, if you found one of those things
to be true, would you sell or junk the car, or would you have it
repaired? Under warranty, of course.

But hey, on this side of the pond at least, new cars seem to have lacked
ashtrays in recent years, so my question wasn't altogether apposite
either :)

Do cars still come with ashtrays? The new Toyota Corolla I bought last
December didn't have one.

For the record, I had to look up apposite! :)

Hi Tia,

That was fascinating. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe that explains why I so frequently see smokers toss their butts
out the window. When the ashtray is no longer inside the car, the
whole area outside the car becomes the ashtray.

I'm on the US side of the pond and I don't believe any cars here have
them any more. What side are you, Gene? I had assumed that you were on
the US side also. The elimination of ash trays seems like a good idea,
but there is a downside. My part of Texas is in the midst of a terrible
drought--everything extremely dry--and we are experiences a very large
number of roadside fires caused by people using "nature's ash tray".

"I then found the sump drain plug or oil filler cap was welded shut."

Don't talk too much about that!
Remember that gas tanks used to have drain plugs, and so did automatic
transmissions! Now you get to either take things apart, or siphon the
contents.

I haven't had a cigarette in 43 years now, but even back in the days
when I smoked, I never did that.

And after I stopped smoking, I used to use the ashtray for change for
toll booths.

What a bummer! They were so useful for storing loose coins.

What a bummer! They were so useful for storing loose coins.
My Toyota Highlander has at least 4 small compartments that I can use
to store coins, so I don't miss the ashtray in the slightest.

Windows 7 does not have a "Recovery Backup Wizard."
Did you buy Windows 7 preinstalled, with no install disc?

Perhaps Seum could

1) Take a screen snapshot, with the dialogs showing.
2) Post it on imageshack.us or other image hosting site.
Remembering to select "do not resize", so the image is not
altered by the hosting site.
3) Then post to USENET, with a link to the image.

In the same screenshot, it might also be possible to put up
a System control panel or System Information, something that
shows the version of Windows being used.

*******

Reasons for things to fail:

1) A service the software needs, isn't running or won't start.
And then the main software dies, when the dependency is not met.
2) Any number of registry related issues... Or file system
permissions... and so on.

Checking Event Viewer, would be a place to look, but it's like
"wading into a gravy lake, looking for quarters on the bottom".
You hardly ever get a quarter you can use.

*******

On my Acer laptop, with pre-installed Windows, it started prompting
me, within a couple days, to prepare a bootable "recovery console" CD.
That prompt comes from Microsoft. Another prompt comes from Acer,
suggesting I make a set of reinstall DVDs, which uses the hidden
partition on the hard drive. So those are examples of promptings
you can receive, when Windows 7 was pre-installed. I think I
ended up making a three DVD set, a "driver" DVD, and the recovery
console CD.

If you have a retail installer DVD, there is hardly a reason to
do any of that. As your installer DVD does all the same things
(it can boot to recovery console, or can be used to reinstall).
Windows can still put an icon in the notification area, warning
you that you haven't configured your Backup strategy yet. And
you can disable those notifications if you want. Especially
if you're using a third party backup method.

Most no longer have ashtrays but many offer a "smokers package" that
includes an ashtray and a lighter.

But if you get that, where do you plug in your phone?

People have been tossing butts out the window since long before ashtrays
started disappearing.
