Ratarded OS

You get points for not getting the point.
The point is if you don't know your computer is downloading a large file
you are clueless. So, no points for you!

How would I know? I don't live with you.
Your pretty stupid talking about things you know nothing about, eh? As
it just makes you look like a dumb ass. But hey, if it looks like a
duck... ;-)

It's not the OS, it's the program. And I agree with you and a few of
the others in this thread that it is very bad ergonomics, even crazy
ergonomics, IMO.

Aside from the fact that an extra icon on the task bar is likely to be
out of one's focus of attention, how does that kind of indication
appear to a user who normally has his task bar hidden? I ask because I
don't know, but if as I suspect the new icon is also hidden, that poor
user will have less of an indication than the rest of us (i.e.,
none)...
Thanks for agreeing with me. I really didn't mean to start a war! I dual
boot Windows 7 with XP but hardly ever use Windows 7. Other than booting
up faster, everything else is slower. Explorer windows take longer to
populate especially in folders with large numbers of files. I just
mention that as one small example. I've got a high quality scanner that's
not supported plus an older printer. And all *kinds* of software. Movies
stutter... and the list goes on. I've got ....
ASUS P5N-D
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 # 2.40GHz
8 GB ram
Nvidia GeForce GTS 350
Dual boot XP Professional, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

XP can only use about 3.5GB of the ram but it outperforms the hell out of
Windows 7.

As far as my original post, I was working on someone else's computer.
Shortly after I made that post, I went to uninstall something (can't
remember what now) and ran into the same thing... some confirmation
dialog that had popped up behind.

I had a hard time parting with Windows 98 too... :)

Surely there was another window lit or flashing on the taskbar which you
should have seen??
Yeah, I did. The next morning. After I closed the other window.

You seem to have lost track of the subject of this thread.

:)

I haven't mentioned it elsewhere in this thread, but I have had the
same problem of the hidden dialog. And - I am in no way a novice at
Windows or at computers in general.

It was probably put in the program as a sort of corollary of "no good
deed goes unpunished", rephrased as "no one who multi-tasks goes
unpunished" :)

Likewise, Gene. And contrary to what has been said up-thread, when
this happens there isn't a separate entry in the taskbar to alert you
and alt+tab doesn't show it either. You have to move/minimize all of
the windows in front of the dialog to find it. You'd think that
before "discussing" the issue that the participants would have been
sure to experience or at least understand the problem. But that would
get in the way of a good flame fest wouldn't it?

You don't even have to multitask - I've had it happen when nothing
other than the update was running and I had hands-off the mouse and
keyboard.

Slartibartfast: No, that's perfectly normal paranoia. Everyone in the

I *think* I recall occasionally seeing a new icon in the task bar, but
usually only *after* I had minimized or exited from some windows
preparatory to cancelling the installation :)

Pretty damning of the program designers...

To quote a friend of mine from years ago, it's enough to piss off the

Obviously, by "lick" you mean "beat" or "defeat". Yes, you are correct.

You really, really, really should protect your chain - it's incredibly
easy to pull your chain...
