Ratarded OS

I agree there's some indication somewhere that there is a window / dialog
waiting for input, but, the OP has a valid point. These dialog boxes should
take focus and be placed on top of any open windows. It's how XP worked, 2K
worked, AFAICR, 9x worked NT worked, and 3 worked. It is not unreasonable
for the OP to assume 7 should work that way as well.
Actually on occasion, any and ALL of them could and would end up with
the dialog asking for user confirmation behind the main window of a
program. The MOST frequent offender was Adobe Reader.

Oh I looked under the hood alright. I always do. And I am not crazy
about what I see. I see it built for idiots.
So, you know about this, huh?

XP has none of the above period, and I could go on about what XP doesn't
have. The 10 year old XP is coming to the end of its life cycle.

You think Microsoft has the ability to kill off XP? Nope, they do not.
They been trying to since Vista has been released. Last I heard was more
Windows users are using XP more than any other Windows version. Why do
you think that is?
A lot of companies and organizations I have contracted in are or have
killed off XP already.

Army is using Win 7 too

What a home user does, I could care less about it.

Some users are still on Windows 9'x, ME, and Win 2k, and I don't care
about that either.

And I wonder how many everyday users are aware of that? Evidently the OP
was not. According to his description, a vital dialog was hidden
underneath another window - seems like shoddy programming to me.
If you can make it happen every time, it is programming, otherwise it is
likely caused by a z-order issue or another input stepping on it, like
the user clicking in the main window when the dialog box is being fired off.

Xp doesn't have a lot of things. Not even SATA support. But many of
things can be added and many have.

Windows Vista and 7 are built for idiots. So I don't find it strange
that idiots are sticking to it like glue. And most of the people I know
who has used computers for decades are pretty annoyed by Windows 7.

Microsoft tried to make their OS idiot proof with MS Bob. That was a
huge failure. Now it looks like they are trying it again.

No, but I don't expect them to hide the fact.

Here's a wild idea, use XP then and STFU.
Why? I paid for Windows 7 and I am using it. You think everybody should
bow down to Microsoft and not say anything? If you do, who do you work for?

I thought you knew what you were talking about. I thought you had some
savvy, but what I see is the ranting and babbling of home user with a
lot of lip service.

You'll go one and on like you do with Alias.

And I thought you were intelligent enough and could figure out why XP is
still the most used OS even after 4 years later.

I have this theory that all of the old time programmers at Microsoft are
now retired. And now a whole new group has taken over. And they don't
have the experience of all of the mistakes from the past. And see this
with Vista and Windows 7.

And while making things idiot proof is a good thing among idiots, it
doesn't impress experts too well. And all it does is to dumb down users
more and more. And I don't think dumbing down users as a good thing.

I have a better idea! Why don't we all work together and make Windows 8
far better? Otherwise Microsoft will just lose market share (like they
are doing with Vista and Windows 7) and become no more. Is that what you
want?

I have forgotten more than you'll ever know about XP or any prior
versions of the O/S too. You are going to try to tell me about that open
by default O/S. What the hell are you talking about anyway? I tell why
XP is hard to kill off. There are 16 trillion of them in use, and they
had a majority of market. It's going to take a long time to kill-off XP
(the numbers). But that is not going stop MS from moving on, me and a
whole lot of others.

You want to talk about idiots and something for idiots, then that's your
problem. If you want to use old technology and bury your head in the
sand, that's problem.

If you want to reminisce about old times, you can't live again , that's
your problem.

All I see is more of your lip-service without a lick of evidence or
proof of anything. Your lip-service doesn't cut it. I got a theory too.

My theory is lip-service is a dime a dozen and everyone has lip-service,
including you. :)

TBH I don't really much care if it is Microsoft or some other company
that produces an O/S. There will be differences that I will have to get
used to, there will be features that get on my tits, there will be
features that I think "how did I ever manage without ...".
One thing that does puzzle me is why you say since you can't run some
legacy aps that means MS want to control you?

<Pedant>
You didn't pay for the software you paid for a license to use it.
</pedant>

How is not using a product bowing down to them ? The 'I bought it so I
will use it' argument is spurious in the extreme. Yes you should force
youself to use something, even though you dislike it initially, for a
while to allow any predjudices etc to surface, but after a year if it
still annoys you/you can't make it do what you want then ditch it, stop
smashing your head against a wall .

I do not work for anyone (well maybe the government as I am a carer).

There are lots and lots and... of Linux[1] et al distros out there they
are free. So download lots, use lots, and find one the one that does
what YOU want, but please stop this constant naysaying about an O/S that
many people use and can get to do everything they want.

It's been obvious for quite a while that he's not looking for a

Did the OP say he was using Auto Hide, Dumbo?

Anyway, if you know what you are doing - hard for you I know you to
grasp the concept that the Taskbar will show when the mouse pointer is
at the bottom of the screen.

I've not seen that on XP yet but if that's the case, then poor programming
and not the OS would be to blame. To this point my installers have all
worked the same from 9x up with this regard.
