I left the Windows Live Essential Update KB2434419 run all night and it
still hadn't progressed but maybe 1/8 of the way, so I cancelled it. Lo and
behold, when I closed the update window, there was another windows hidden
behind it asking if I wanted to update the whole Live Essentials Suite or
just the parts of it that were previously installed. So why did that window
not appear on *TOP* of the update window where you could SEE the
f&%k*#ing thing?!!!

And why is Bill Gates running around giving our money away instead of
giving some of it back to us!

Look at the Task Bar to see what is running. If a Windows was being
displayed but it was hidden from view by another window, it's going to
be on the Task Bar -- look at it. The window asking you for a response
should have been highlighted in the Task Bar too.
And why is Bill Gates running around giving our money away instead of

Operator error rant, you should look in the mirror.

That happened to me today with the IE9 installation.

When things seem to be hung up like that, I move the relevant window
aside to see if there is something hidden behind it.

Seems to me that one shouldn't have to do that on a modern OS.
Total nonsense, the application was waiting for a user response. How in
the hell could the application be hung, if the applications is waiting
for a user response? And besides, all one has to do in look at the Task
Bar to see what is running.

Because you don't know what you're talking about you would say that
wouldn't you?

The IE icon in the taskbar is highlighted and changes colour to indicate
it needs a response.

Clueless!!

What? That something requiring a user response to proceed is going to be
halted until it gets a response to proceed or not?

Yeah there are a whole lot of things that are modern. Just because
something is modern does it mean they all work the same way?

I agree there's some indication somewhere that there is a window / dialog
waiting for input, but, the OP has a valid point. These dialog boxes should
take focus and be placed on top of any open windows. It's how XP worked, 2K
worked, AFAICR, 9x worked NT worked, and 3 worked. It is not unreasonable
for the OP to assume 7 should work that way as well.

For me it was an initial annoyance, but not a big deal. One begins to see
the blinking icon in the taskbar almost peripherally and knows what it
means.

No, that the dialog box requiring input does not get put on top and get
focus is the issue here.

I don't want focus taken away from me doing something in another
application on the screen. It should beep and let me know something is
happening instead of just taking focus away. I hated that. Outlook on an
exchange system would do that if Outlook was sitting in the task bar,
take focus away.

Yeah, it is what it is. And there are other application running on the
machine like Thunderbird on my personal Win 7 machine, and I noticed
Outlook now when Vista or Win 7 was in use by me at a client's site that
both notify with a pop-up message that have fade away notification.

I don't like focus taken away from what I was doing.

No - that you have to go hunting to find it!

And you don't have to go hunting to find it if you know to look at the
signals being presented in the first place.

That's valid. I suppose the point, though, is that if every other version
acted that way, then the expectation is that the newest would too. That
does limit improvement to some degree, but that is the expectation from new
users.

One should expect to learn new ways with a new OS, soon annoyances become
features and the behavior expectation changes.

Surely there was another window lit or flashing on the taskbar which you
should have seen??

Why should it? I write business programs for a living. If I am
converting an old solution using old technology, and Win 7 and Vista are
new technology, to new technology, then why should the new solution act
the same way as the old solution?

The requirements for the new solution will be different in the aspects
of functionality, and new technology being used in a new solution may
force things to be different than what the old solution was doing.
One should expect to learn new ways with a new OS, soon annoyances become
features and the behavior expectation changes.
It is what it is.

And I wonder how many everyday users are aware of that? Evidently the OP
was not. According to his description, a vital dialog was hidden
underneath another window - seems like shoddy programming to me.
