Newsgroups, Windows live mail

What changes have they made to Win.-7 that would keep these from working
with the news readers,
Please read what Bruce Hagen said:

"Windows 7 is an OS and has nothing to do with the newsgroups."

As far as I'm concerned, they didn't suddenly decide to screw up
Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail started out screwed up from the
very beginning. I never liked it.
True, but they do seem to be pessimizing it. :)

When I unstalled WLM 2011 the 2009 version was gone. I downloaded the 2009
version and everytime I tried to install it I got a message saying I already
had a newer version and would end.
Please don't post upside down. And please *do* trim your quotes.

WLM (previous to this latest cock-up) seemed to me to be about as good
or bad as WM or Outlook Express. I never used any of them regularly, so
I could easily have missed some of OE's hidden charms.

You got that right. I didn't listen and installed that piece of
crap and tried to remove it. Had to end up reinstalling my Win 7
and all the applications.
I installed WLM 2011 and when I discovered I didn't like it, I
uninstalled it and reinstalled WLM 2009. No problems at all, my message
base and all settings were preserved.

Sounds like you went through a lot of unnecessary agony for nothing.

Unless you are dissatisfied with your mail program, I can't imagine
why you'd install another one. Thunderbird is a mail program that
incidentally does newsgroups. You are much better off to install a
program that is intended to do newsgroups. My own personal favorite
is Gravity, but there are plenty of other choices that are superior
to Thunderbird, let alone WLM.
I started in with Usenet with Web-TV. I started with a computer with a
Win.ME, then XP, Vista, and now W-7. I tried OE at first since it came with
the PC. Tired it for E-Mail but never liked it as much as web based E-mail,
so I just have stuck with Yahoo.
I tried T-Bird twice. first time was long ago because so many people said
everything was better than OE. I could not get it to work so I gave up since
to me OE seemed to be working fine.
I then tried it again with Vista because for a while MS had screwed up WM
so it would not work with Usenet. As usual MS was claiming nothing was wrong
on their end. I again could not get T-Bird to work with my news feed but
before trying to find out why someone suggested a free news feed that is
called Eternal September now, it was something else then. It worked with the
WM for some reason, so again I gave up on T-Bird.
When W-7 came along I loaded WLM and it was close enough to OE and WM as
far as a news reader that I could figure it out fast so stuck with it.

I did remove 2011 first. Had no problem removing it.
Did you also remove every other piece of Windows Live? Just removing the
mail piece isn't enough.

for the time being.
Normally I use a Mac, but when I travel to dangerous places, I take my
crappy laptops - ones that run Windows of course.

So who told you this?
I am using Win.7 and WLM and it is working just great.
That's because you have stayed with WLM version 14. Heaven help those
who install v15 and expect to make sense of even a short thread!

Great, I did not know MS decided to screw this up now. I guess if I get
another computer or have to format one I will have to learn to use
something
like T-Bird then. I had tried them years ago but gave up.

WLM works fine for me. I can read newsgroup messages, post to newsgroups
and have my replies automatically be put at the bottom of a message. That's
all I require in a newsreader. WLM can also combine binary files that are
posted
in pieces although I don't use that facility too often. What features do
other
people need that WLM can't provide?

Do you see how your comments and Stan's comments look like they came
from the same person? That's just one of the things that's completely
broken in the newsreader you're using.

WLM does not add a ">" for quoted text? That's a major "whoops",
if so!

I think it was done on purpose to try and persuade users to leave Usenet
and go to web based, moderated forums.
I think they may find that Usenetters won't give up that easily. I can
think of a few that would change O/S rather than give in to Microsoft's
attempts at total domination and switch to their forums.

It's so, alright, but it's not the only thing broken in WLM 15.

EH? I've uninstalled WLM v15, re-installed and uninstalled again on W7
HP perfectly OK without having to do all that...

I can't talk about Windows Mail, since I hardly used it at all, but as
far as I'm concerned, Windows Live Mail is (and even was) *much* worse
than Outlook Express.

So, rather than find out what your problem was, and fix it (see
Relic's reply), you took the extreme step of reinstalling Windows, and
all the work that involves. That's like replacing your car because it
got a flat tire.

I uninstalled anything to do with Windows Live. I even went thru the
registry and deleted all the entries for Windows Live. I tried everyday for
over a week before deciding to reinstall windows from scratch.
I was a programmer for 35 years. I do know how to do stuff manually with
windows and tried everything I could think of. Finally gave up.

Look at your quoting. WLM does NOT work fine for you.
