Multiple Desktops?

I currently open a particular folder to work on a given subject or
project. My question is "can a single user have multiple desktops"?

There is a thread devoted to this above:
OP John Ferrell Multiple Desktops on 30th April 2012

It contains information about multiple desktops, multiple monitors and
any required software.

Happy reading if you haven't already seen it or want more information

ooops, wrong thread, doh!

I run two successful businesses. I also use the computer for personal
pleasure. Harassing dolts like you is fun, especially when all I have to
do is pull your chain.
Alias makes $10,000/week installing ubuntu in the one business, and makes
$15,000/week removing ubuuntu in the other business. He's a clever
bastard.

I haven't installed Ubuntu in over three years. I haven't installed
*any* operating system for someone else in three years. You are still
lying about me, though, why? My businesses are not computer businesses.
Sorry...my bad. I've been out of the loop for awhile. I'll stalk you for
a bit, and catch up. So, you're no longer an ubuntard? Death is using
ubuntu, and likes it now. But I installed it, so don't try to get money
from me :)

I guess I don't get it, which is no one's problem but mine. :)
Thanks.
I think you are better organized and probably better at staying on
topic than I....

Reporting back:
I have found the Multiple desktops to be useful in some, but not all
conditions. In general I prefer the flexibility of the "Fences"
program that allows me to group shortcuts on the normal desktop by
function. The basic problem for me was that I have more shortcuts than
will fit on the desktop. Fences allows me to reduce each collection to
a scroll box that I can drag to expand or reduce.

The basic problem that we are addressing is that some of us are neat
and tidy with the manner in which we operate. Others of us border on
chaos in our personal organization. I belong to the latter group.

I like my un-tidy world and in general it works for me. I think
Windows and Linux are both good but are no enough alike to compare and
contrast.

All of the Linux books seem to be in a hurry to rush me off to some
kind of GUI and the Windows folks give you a choice of an overview the
details at a bit level.

At the moment I am bouncing from one subject to another and enjoying
it. Chaos is fun once you accept it...

Thanks to all, I am going back to lurking here. There are more puzzles
and mysteries to solve!

Thanks to all.
Ken has shown me the solution I was after.

You can in Linux, give it a try (Linux Mint seems to be the, er,
flavour of the moment). In Windows if you have a lot of shortcuts
just stick them on the desktop, there's room for a couple of hundred
there.
