We definitely have differing views - I just want to read the
newsgroups, I'm not interested in mathematics.
Neither am I but to me, reading newsgroups involves NOT reading troll
messages.

Thunderbird now has a VERY good filtering system for news messages - you
can filter on the contents of any message header you like. To me that's
far more intuitive (and more accurate) than scoring.

Agreed - I just add them easily and simply to my Thunderbird bozo
filter, no maths involved.

T'belch doesn't have scoring so the filtering system is pretty useless,
unfortunately. You couldn't survive in some of the troll-laden groups
w/o much better filtering than T'Barf provides. If it works for you,
that's fine, if you ever do venture into more troll-laden groups, get a
newsreader with scoring and learn to use it, it's simple and makes
newsreading much more enjoyable.

Sorry that's rubbish. In the current versions you can filter on ANY news
message header you want which IMHO is BETTER than scoring as most trolls
nym-shift constantly.

Rubbish again. I survive very nicely in certain troll-ridden groups
using TBird and its current VERY GOOD filters...

Had been using WLM with no problem until recent Win updates. Now I can't
send new mail, forward etc. but can receive mail. Click "New Mail" it
appears busy but does nothing, clicking anything else then gets "WLM not
responding" and I have to close it.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling WLM, no difference.
Thought I'd give Thunderbird 16 a try, all going well until I closed the
program and re-opened it, it downloaded new mail but deleted what was
already in the Inbox! Googling and looking at Mozilla forums it seems a
common problem with no clear solution. Tried TBird 17 which is a beta
version but it's the same.
Another PC with Win 7 32 bit, this one is 64 bit, works well with WLM.
Any other half decent mail programs available which work?
Claws Mail, Pegasus, Download The Bat! Home Edition 5.2.2
The Bat! , Eudora 8.x, Eudora , Outlook (paid), Thunderbird, Forte Agent
(paid, and the email part sucks - I just use it for newsgroups).

PS:
Thunderbird Setup 10.0.11esr.exe - ESR is stable - for business it's
better than to mess with the current 16.x releases.

Sorry, that's rubbish, you are obviously unfamiliar with the advantages
of scoring.

Rubbish again, again, you should learn just how much better scoring can
be.

Two different ways of doing the same job. Each way suits its adherents
well enough. I suspect that nobody is going to be converted here.

Thunderbird has an OK filtering system, far better than, say, OE or
WLM, but it's clumsy to use and maintain.

Xnews's scoring system is tops for me - easy to use and very, very
powerful, much more so than TBird's system.

I see Seamus is infesting yet another newsgroup.

A remainder to everyone: it serves no purpose responding to trolls,
because they just hug themselves in glee at having provoked a
reaction. The only course is to "sit on one's hands" and ignore
them.

Unfortunately, even posts like the above are a response. (And ones like
this!)
