Exposes people to *some* such risk? Certainly. But depending on
what you do, you can increase the risk or minimize it. I recommend
minimizing it.
I disagree with your original statement that "Many people assume that
everything on the desktop is a shortcut". Most people I deal with don't
really understand what a shortcut is in the first place. They're more
likely to delete a shortcut and later be surprised that the file is
still on the disk than to delete a file and be surprised that it
*isn't* on the disk. To most people, delete is delete. Even the concept
of the Recycle Bin is hard to grasp. Most of the rest of us can easily
tell the difference between a shortcut on the desktop and a real file.
I don't think I've ever in all my computing years deleted a file,
thinking I was deleting a shortcut. I'm sure it's happened plenty of
times, but I just don't believe that it's much a risk in the general
population - I certainly haven't seen much sign of it. And I tend to
think that the kind of person who would make such a mistake would also
be the kind of person who hasn't emptied their recycle bin for the past
two years, and the file is probably still available for recovery.
