I think that we all have our personal preferences. It is said that variety IS the spice of life.

I noticed Draceena uses Yahoo also, plus the other two search engines.

No offense to Draceena, none at all. I avoid anything Yahoo related like the Ebola virus!

I believe it's because Yahoo takes over so many areas in the computer. Just my humble opinion though.

I don't like Yahoo, either. Not just their search engine, but their email service, too. Tons of spam still arrive in my box, and despite my moving these emails to the spam box, they often still arrive in my regular box. But I only use it for unimportant stuff, anyway. What I can't understand is why Microsoft was offering them so much money to acquire them. The only reason I can see would be that Microsoft would add another trophy to their case. Along with many millions of customers. It certainly couldn't have been for their search engine, it's one of the slowest I've used.

I tend to keep my computer locked down like Fort Knox so I certainly don't have Yahoo or any other browser running rampant through my computer. The only reason I use Yahoo is for the Airmiles points I get from searches, and that's only if and when I want to use it (usually for the oddest searches that could never "profile" me as anything but crazy, lol) and sometimes it actually finds things that the other browsers miss.

But, like you said, variety is the spice of life, I'm always open to trying something new. :)

A few years ago, when my son travelled round the world, he asked me to install Yahoo messenger so that he could more easily keep in touch. It took over the computer, opening up at any odd moment, and refused to be configured not to do so. On his return I uninstalled it and used C Cleaner. I deleted all remaining bits and pieces, and even edited the registry. It still kept popping up, so I did a format and reinstalled windows. NEVER EVER AGAIN Yahoo or Norton.:(

Try out Windows Live Messenger. It opens at startup, but with CCleaner, or the program of your choice, you can prevent it from opening every time you startup. In fact, Windows Live has a few good, free programs.

I have Yahoo Messenger installed on my PC and certainly don't have it loading at startup. Yahoo only runs when I want it too. If you look in preferences, there is an option to run yahoo messenger at windows startup that can be disabled. Running CCleaner, you can remove anything from startup that you don't want. I never use yahoo search engine.

As for Yahoo Email, I am slowly forgetting I ever started using yahoo for Email. However the only problem I have with Yahoo Email is local storage. I'm not going to pay a free Email supplier for local storage with a POP3 account. This seems a little backward to me. 1GB free Email storage online but yet you have to pay in order to store your own Email.

Getting back to the google issue. Why exactly are you wanting your searches hidden? Have you seen the movies where the one with hidden details was the one drawing the most suspicion. It draws a question, Why are they hidding? Your search history may not be saved but if a red flag went up, I would bet your searches could be monitored regardless of which search engine you use.

Clifford, you're probably right about your searches being monitored, but at least with the right search engines, you have a little privacy. Bing allows you to clear your search history. lxquick claims that they don't collect information from people who uses their search engine. Whether or not that is true, I honestly don't know. And it's not always a matter of hiding searches, but sometimes we all want a little privacy. The feature in lxquick showing the "https" links as well as the "http" ones means a lot to some people. Most of the time, I use Bing, it's my default search provider, and a good one. One more of Microsoft's great releases of 2009. Being a loyal Microsoft customer, I use their products as much as possible (except IE8). Too, soon Google will be the enemy of Microsoft. They plan to have their own OS and take customers from whoever they can. Including Windows. So for me, when I made my comment about Google, it wasn't all about privacy. We control 90+% of the world's computing population, and no effort should be spared to squash any competitor who tries to change that. My effort is simply to remove Google from my search engines. As far as privacy goes, I have to agree with you. The government can and will find out anyone's search history, should they decide to do so.

Google hands down is the best as a "Search Engine". If you use Google, there is no need to use three or four other search engines. And I am not really sure why you would...?

Anyways, I have been slipping and using Bing time from time just to check it out, but I still find myself going back to Google. My home page too is set to Google, but I use the iGoogle page. It's great, I swear lol. Every time I open my browser, which is google chrome now not firefox or IE, I have almost all the info on everything I like to and need to look at on a daily basis.

I mean, how could you not like having Email, Local Weather, News, Sports, Comedy, International News, Hulu, YouTube and more all on one page for your ease of use?

It is called congestion, loading everything on one page. For me loading a blank page and searching for what I want seems quicker in the long run.

I got high speed internet, It loads pretty much instantly. But I guess if you do not, a basic blank page will work.

To be honest about it, there's a lot of search engines, the list is growing by the week, there are seven still left on mine. That's a lot to choose from, but they all may not be good. Bing and lxquick are my two favorite ones.
