Windows 7 News Reader

I noticed you are using Xnews and wondered what an X-face was.
So on Googling I ended up here!
http://www.xs4all.nl/~ace/X-Faces/
Why can't I see yours, does Windows Live Mail ignore it or is it
something more basic ?
As far as I know, none of the Microsoft news clients support X-Face.
Not very many do, out of the box. Thunderbird doesn't. Agent doesn't.
Gravity does. Seems to me I remember a 3rd-party add on for Outlook
Express...

I made my little X-face picture myself. There is a certain spec to it -
like, 2 colors, a certain size. Then there are converters available
that will take the picture and convert it to a text string that you can
add as an extra header like to your messages. If WLM can add custom
headers, you could probably add an X-Face to your messages... but you
wouldn't be able to see it yourself.

Hmmm. Come to think of it, WLM is a pretty good newsreader. And free,
to boot!

I tried it as a newsreader several months ago. It was long ago enough
that I can't remember the details of why I didn't like it, but I
definitely didn't like it, and I like Agent 6.0 much better.

There are a few problems with WLM 2011 for example:

1. Not preceding a quoted line of text with a "> "
2. Not indenting quoted lines of text
3. The one that was a show stopper for me is this one. If you had WLM
to automatically check your accounts for new messages it would work just
fine on the very first attempt after starting the program. But on
subsequent attempts it would error out on the first email or newsgroup
account in your account list. Why this annoyed me is that the email
account it bombed out on just so happened to be the one where I receive
the majority of my email.

There were other problems with it, but I can't recall right of hand what
they were...

After reading about all the problems/foibles with WLM2011, I decided to stay
with WLM2009 on my Win7 machine. I have no real problem with it, and it's
close enough in setup, rules, and configuration to Outlook Express that it's
easy enough for anyone using OE to install and set up.

?Hi, Roy.

You've described very well the way WLM 2011 behaves on my computer, too.
:>(

A couple of other irritations that you didn't mention:

4. Adding the "?" before the first character of messages I send. (This
one has apparently been identified - but not yet fixed - as caused by IE9
beta and Win7 SP2 beta.)
5. Insert Signature inserts a blank line, which I must delete, before
what I type in the Tools | Signatures text box - sometimes.

But, all in all, I still use it because I can work around all these without
too much hassle. And I like some of the improvements over WLM 2009. And it
IS "The Wave of the Future". Isn't it?

Oh, the biggie:

6. Every few minutes as long as WLM is running, even in the background,
no matter what I'm doing, the Checking new messages window pops up in my
face and STEALS FOCUS from what I'm trying to concentrate on. My keystrokes
go into that window, which will not disappear until I click on another
window, or on the "Hide" button in this window, or the "X" to close this
window. ALL of those dismissal methods require me to stop thinking about
the work I'm trying to do and divert my attention to this
usually-meaningless window. This is the window that has no name except
"Windows Live Mail"; it's the window that you are talking about in your #3.

So, why do I keep using WLM 2011, rather than switch to Thunderbird or back
to WLM 2009? I HOPE that I'm helping the WLM Team by continuing to
beta-test WLM 2011 - which THEY say is no longer beta. Many of us disagree
with that statement. :>(

I moved WM from Vista to the new W-7 PC. WLM is terrible unless you only
have one email account.

WLM is capable of handling more than one email account. I was able to
use it with the 3 email accounts that I have, so you must have done
something wrong.

Check your settings, I have no problem with 5 E-Mail accounts using WLM

I have seven email accounts and am subscribed to four newsgroups. I am using
WLM Beta 4. It has its foibles but works fine. I keep trying other email
clients and newsreaders but they seem to be either excessively complicated
or have worse foibles. Outlook Express and Windows Mail were better still,
but that, alas, is history. Though it can be done, I am reluctant to run
Windows Mail without any MS security updates.

I am just hoping that when WLM comes out of beta it will have most of its
present shortcomings corrected and no new ones added.

Agent rules! (I use version 4.2, myself. Is version 6 really a big
improvement, anyone?)
I'm using Agent version 1.93 (with Windows 7) for the simple reason
that I'm used to it. I tried later versions but they didn't do
anything for me.

Is it free? A good link?
Free Agent is free but it doesn't let you filter. Filtering is almost
a necessity in today's Usenet environment. It's well worth it to
upgrade to the full version of Agent.

I had problems posting with latest WLM. In plain text the '>' character
isn't applied in a response post (to all intents and purposes breaking
the news thread). If one posts in HTML some of the problems are covered,
but my news server only accepts plain text posts -- so -- WLM 2011 is
not a solution for me. Therefore, I did what I didn't want to do and
went with Thunderbird until such time as WLM 2011 is fixed.

That's a problem that has existed since Outlook Express. There's a program
called OE Quotefix that addresses that issue in OE, Windows Mail (Vista),
and WLM 2009 (I haven't installed WLM 2011, so I can't say for certain if
it'll work with it).

FreeAgent no longer exists. I suppose you may be able to find it
somewhere on the net, but Forte no longer updates or distributes it.

No, no .. WML 2011 has a bigger problem. It simply breaks threads
outright. I used OE for years .. this is another thing. Plain text news
post replying is broken in WLM 2011.

Another reason why I've stayed with WLM 2009 for now. Maybe when 2012 is
released I'll give it a try ;-)
