Win8 Why?

B

Bob Henson

I don't see much spam in Usenet, and many of my regular and valued
correspondents use GG because for various reasons they have to.
Then don't set the filter up.

The rest depends what you call spam - there isn't much "commercial"
spam. However, most of the unpleasant oiks that pollute the newsgroups
with foul language and childish behaviour come from Google Groups, and
it is those of whom I wish to be rid. On some servers, I do it group by
group so as not to cut out the one or two reasonable people in some
groups whose messages I do wish to read. Of course, I try to persuade
them to install a news reader and avoid the Google groups - I can't
think of any good reason why anyone *has* to use Google, and when it is
explained to them they usually change.

However, we don't want to publicise the filters too much as it's very
handy to have all the yobs in one place where we can deal with them easily.

Set up a filter (either for a whole server or a specific group) and
use a custom field "Message-ID" "contains" "googlegroups" (no speech
marks) and set the result to "delete" and "ignore sub-threads" - that
will get rid of most spam.
Thank you. I was afraid it was something like that. My newsreader (TB 2)
is not capable of filtering Message-ID, and I don't feel like changing
readers right now. :-(
What, you can't set up custom kill rules in TB?!?
No, not to my knowledge. If you know something I don't, please share.

No, sadly I don't; I've been looking at TB for when something comes
along that breaks TP (Turnpike), and it had been looking good so far.
But that's a strong negative )-:.

Troll much?
Win 8 has one redeeming feature in my opinion (for whatever that's worth).

Like everybody else, MS must bring new products to market, and make a
profit. When MS makes a decent profit, the shares go up, and hopefully
the dividends as well. Since I own a handful of MS shares, I'm all for
MS making money. That aside, I'd like to see improvements made to win7.

TB 10.0.5 has Subject, From, Date Size, Custom.
Under Custom can add any message header

Look on the left side of the page for T'belch.

I understand later versions of T'burp have better filtering but I don't
know if they can filter on the message ID Header. Try using Hamster.

Making a desktop look like a smart phone. Dumb.

KenW
I agree. If I wanted a phone desktop I would get a phone

I won't be upgarding.
In fact I intend buying a new computer soon and will load Win 7 not 8

Thank you. At the moment, the lack of sophisticated filtering is just a
minor annoyance. If it becomes a real problem, I will consider changing
newsreaders or getting a news proxy.

That's good to know. If I get desperate, I'll update.
Problem is that later versions still have VERY inadequate filtering.

You might begin to play around with something like Hamster, it won't
hurt anything and it'll be there when/if you need it.

And can you find one with XP Pro?

Char Jackson presented the following explanation :
Why would you want to? XP is entering its sunset years.
It is the only useable mature Windows out there and it does not get in
your face and require "fixes" to make it really friendly. That's why.
Win Vista and 7 were created for business. Business rejected Vista.
Not sure how 7 is fairing.

Sunset is a beautiful thing.

Windows XP does not make me want to switch to Linux like the later Win
OSs do.

You would think that after all the service packs for XP, that Vista and
7 would require very few. But not so. I seem to get multitudes of Win
7 updates. No lessons learned at MS.

So what percentage of PC owners still revere XP.
Leave out those who were "forced" to get Vista or 7 or 8.
Can't wait for 8 1/2. lol

And are you willing to hold your arm out in a salute to Win 8 just so
you can touch the screen? Well maybe for a kiosk to touch once or
twice but not to do real work. Wrist pads are now arm pads to elevate
the arm to screen height. lol

I can put toolbars on XP to do the same as Win8 big buttons.
So why do I need Win 7 or 8?

I have several fast HDs on the Win 7 machine but Win7 cannot copy
between at full disk speed. Useless. And it is a 3.2 GHz Quad
processor with 8 G RAM.

Aren't you forgetting Windows 7? It's quite usable, mature, stable,
and it's out there. :)

Win 7 doesn't get in my face.
and require "fixes" to make it really friendly.
What fixes are those?
Sunset is a beautiful thing.
Sometimes. In this case, it's the final stage before death, so maybe
not so beautiful.

So from a user's perspective, what is Win8 supposed to improve/do
different than Win7 ?
Win8 turns back the clock of progress 20 years, devolving computers into
giant Playskool toys with a giant Internet Explorer button.

Windows 7 is perfectly usable. I have no "fixes" applied to it, and I
don't see that it needs any. What fixes are you referring to?

Vista wasn't that bad, either. It's main problem was its heavy resource
use, which was improved in Win7.
Windows XP does not make me want to switch to Linux like the later

If you want lots of bug and security fixes, by all means go ahead and
install install Linux. That OS has as many or more daily patches than
does Windows.
