Win7 will not connect to camera - device driver error 31

FWIW, on this box (W8-Pro-64) that directory is empty. I also have not
had any problems connecting the camera or card reader through any USB
port. Maybe that's a clue.

HTH

Thanks, Wolf. Empty on mine also, so evidently not the problem.

DOS? Young whippersnapper, that's new-fangled stuff. CP/M and Altair
Basic are the only things to use!
WOW!! You ARE old. Do you remember GeoWorks? That was before Windows
3.1 and MS stealing LFN capabilities from them. It had features that
would STILL put MS to shame...Then MS came up with "per unit pricing".
It was fun. Now I have to learn ANDROID!! ;-Deano

I remember Geoworks. I also did some programming on a C-64, and on PETs,
usually a mix of Commodore's BASIC and machine language. You may recall
Jim Butterfield, who for a few years was the Commodore guru. I see by a
Wiki search that he died in 2007. More here:

Yeah, the Altair was the second computer I built. The first was just a
single board using LED's for output and switches for input. It ran
Nim. I still have an unopened tape cassette that contains the Altair
bootloader and Basic we used when tape bootloading became possible.

64K of memory! 80K floppy drive! The latest improvements! And that
was all that was necessary to run some really useful software. I wrote
everything from nursing home financial and patient tracking software
to a program that rated NY State scholarship candidates across the
state, based on some very weird criteria.

UNIX! (Xenix) Still using that 64K Altair, I wrote a point-of-sale and
inventory control system that could run simultaneously on multiple
keyboard/monitors or cash registers and automatically keep the
inventory up to date.

Today we need to have about 2 gig just to run the operating system,
and can still choke it by running more than just a few programs at
once. I guess that's progress.

I do not remember GeoWorks but I sure remember lots of great software
that was purchased by competing companies simply so they could kill
it.

First, thanks again to everybody here for their help and suggestions.

The cure was not that difficult, but very time consuming.

My addled old brain forgot that I had another hard drive stored in the
cellar with backup images on it. I checked it, and found one image 7
days after the last known time the camera would connect.

First I made a new image backup of current everything.

Then I used Microsoft Backup to backup files and folders to a drive.

Then I restored the image that I hoped was old enough to be before the
problem. It was - I plugged in the camera and it worked fine.

Next I restored the files and folders with Microsoft backup. This ran
for more than enough time to restore the entire drive. I then looked
at the log and found that it had restored apparently NOTHING. The log
was a miles long list of "file xxxxxx.yyy was skipped...." I checked
dates on the main drive, and sure enough, nothing was current. So why
did it run so long? No clue. But thanks, Microsoft! Always nice to
have dependable backups.

So I tried something different. I restored that Microsoft backup of
files and folders to a different drive rather than the original. This
produced a directory on that drive containing all the files. I then
manually copied the files and folders back to the main drive.

Now all my programs that I use most often seem to be working fine AND
the Canon camera still connects. The card reader is working again
also. So I let Win7 search for updates. It found 11, 8 of which I
installed. Reboot, connect camera, still working!

Hypothesis: when the problem first started there was a Canon MX880
printer drivers update listed in the "Installed Updates." I think this
may have been the trigger that stopped the camera and card reader.
Interestingly, when I searched for updates this time, that one was not
listed.

Happy Valentine's Day!
