The expression "in words of one syllable" was certainly in common use in
Britain when I was younger, and understood pretty universally. Naturally,
it does not literally mean that all, or any, of the words used must consist
of only one syllable. I forget, I'm afraid, that not everyone here is
British. As they say, Britain and America are divided by the fact that they
speak the same language, NOT ALWAYS.

My problem seems to be that the netbook is set up to be in a Homegroup, and
I do not know how to change that to a Workgroup.
Make sure you have identical logon username and password for accounts on
the Workgroup computers and the Netbook. Open these accounts.th

Then, on the Windows 7 computer, open Control Panel - System - Computer
Name, Domain and Workgroup Settings link - Change settings - (opens
System Properties window) - Computer Name tab - Click on "Change"
button, click on the "Workgroup" radio button, and type in the name of
your Workgroup, and check there are no other computers with the same
name on the Workgroup. Cick on Apply or OK all the way to the System
properties Window, then reboot.

You will need to set up file shares on the Netbook and the other
computers amd make sure that the firewall settings are correct, too.
These are all done the same way on Windows 7, Vista and XP.

Many thanks to John and KCB, for their helpful contributions. It is to be
hoped that I will be able to get my netbook to join my network. The whole
idea was that I should be able to silently work whilst watching TV in my
sitting room, instead of having to go into the isolation of my work room.
True, most of my active software probably only works on XP. That is why I
curse MS, frequently. :) They are even worse that the Olympics lot, in
holding the whole world to ransom (as I see it).

Ta, mates,

Ta, mates,
<Raises eyebrow> There's not much mainstream XP software apart from
games that won't work under Windows 7, in my experience.

Some stuff that was ported from '98 to XP or that uses hacks to get
round the hardware access limitations might be problematical, most other
stuff will work in either XP mode or one of the compatibility modes.
I've even managed to get an "XP only" 3G dongle driver to work by
playing with the compatibility modes.

Of course we understood what you said. The Water is Wide indeed, but not
that wide[1].

The hilarity is meant to be fun for *all*, and I for one would have
welcomed it if you had enjoyed our hilarity instead of being sorry.

[1] The allusion to the song is partly the result of what's on my radio
now. It's not Waly Waly, but the style reminded me of that song just in
time for me to write the above.

Gee, maybe there's hope for Micrografx Designer, vs. 7, yet. I am
forced to run it in the XP emulation mode. But, it's a pain in the
brain, although, I have to say, it does work. I thought I tried all the
XP mode stuff ... maybe I missed something.

I am sorry to hear that you were sorry to know that I was sorry ...
However, more heat than light was generated, and I really did wish to know
the answer :)

Although I generated heat rather than light, I believe some of the
posts in this thread are in fact constructive and useful to you.

The basic ideas are these:

Windows before Vista doesn't work with Homegroups.

It helps to have a user account on each computer with the same name and
same password.

The account created on the computers here is a standard account, not an
administrator account, and is not actually used. It just sits there
making Windows happy.
