Where can I find which extension opens which application?

OK!
I guess it was a language issue. The sentence did not make much sense to
me. It was not quite clear how to interprete it. Now it does :)

Fokke
Well, that works both ways :)

In other words, my interpretation of your remark might have been skewed
as well...

All in all, I do think that Microsoft could have done a better job in
the area under discussion - by which I mean something more friendly for
a naive user. I have at most a tiny amount of trouble setting things up
for my convenience (usually!), but like many here, I'm not a naive user.

Not to mention that I read newsgroups and thereby get the benefit of
others' experience :)

I used to live in the UK for 5 years, but I have been back to Holland
for such a long time now that my English has got a bit rusty :)
And I thing many of this NG readers are definitely not naive users. And
this is a very good NG, I follow this for quite some time now. There's a
lot to learn here!

Hi all,

In XP there was an option in a (any) folder, where you can specify for
each extension which application it starts. In W7 it's gone. Where can I
find this now?

Thanks,

How comprehensive is Windows 7 file extension list and how is it kept
up-to-date?

How comprehensive is Windows 7 file extension list
7 on a scale of 10

I'm kidding, of course. How could anyone even make a reasonable guess?
and how is it kept up-to-date?
Many programs add their own data on installation. Many programs hijack
what is already there.

It's a cat-herding project at best.

Windows has it's own list of known file extensions. When you install third party
software it will register its own file extensions during install time.

If you try to open a file that Windows doesn't know about it
will ask you for a program.

It will then register that file extension to that program.
The list of file extensions that Windows is currently aware of
can be found in the registry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
The key names starting with a '.' are the extensions.

As an experiment create a New Text document.
Rename the 'New Text Document.txt' to 'New Text Document.tit'
Double-click New Text Document.tit and choose Notepad as the default program.
Now open regedit and scroll down HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and you will see
a new key has been created: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tit and the (Default)
value has the data : tit_auto_file.

Scroll down to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tit_auto_file and you will see that
the Shell\open command tells Windows to use Notepad for a tit file.
(You can now delete the tits from your registry.)

OK, it's time to make a clean breast of it - you chose that extension on
purpose, didn't you?

Around 1980 I was going to my girlfriend's birthday party. When I was
looking at birthday cards in a store, I saw one with a very nice picture
of some birds outside a window. I turned the card over to see what the
picture was; it was called "Great Tits".

I bought it and gave it to her at the party.

The picture was very nice, and I would have bought the card anyway.
But...

That reminds me of a time, about 6-7 years ago, when I was making a
presentation to some department heads and VP's. I was demonstrating
the effectiveness of a new adult content 'smart' filtering system that
we wanted to implement, and I needed their buy-off. Actually, I needed
their budget, but I digress. I had a canned list of non-adult sites
that the filter allowed, and a second canned list of adult sites that
it blocked. So far, so good, but what about sites that a dumb keyword
filter might trigger on? After all, this snazzy new filter was
supposed to be smarter than the average bear.

They suggested sites about breast cancer, breast feeding, and others.
When they were done, I offered one last site to cap things off:
www.great-tits.com (I think that was the URL, now defunct.) There were
gasps in the room when I mentioned the site, and then a second set of
gasps when the filter allowed the site, then sighs of relief to find
that it was about the great birds that go by that name. Fun stuff. My
boss said he was a split second away from pulling a disappearing act.
Maybe I should have warned him ahead of time. :)

No, it must have been purely a Freudian slip!
I wonder what happens to posts like this when they get rounded-up by all
the web forums that leech this newsgroup. How would it be edited (or not)?
:)

Considering you were only ten years old at the time, it might have been
premature.

Nice story...

I left out that, at the party, I made sure everyone saw the title of the
picture.

And the birthday girl was a good sport about the whole thing.

Maybe "lech" is not as familiar in the UK as in the US? Although
