What do we call the start button?

In a way, it's more a button than the old style. After all, it's round,
just like the buttons on my shirt.
Sorry, I just *had* to say that.
I use all three names mentioned in this thread so far: start orb, start
button, orb. I think my choice is random, but maybe I'm fooling myself.
So you say that you "click the random"?

Sorry, I just *had* to say that.

In the documentation written by my department (desktop provisioning) for my
POE (where we have both XP and Win7...none of that Vista junk) rather than
set up a useless "if-then-else" clause we just use "START button" and ignore
the nitpickers.

MS named it "The Pearl".

I don't suppose you have anything like verification for that? A search
for Pearl in the "Help and Support" file and the Microsoft web site
yields zip.

depends... who's buried in Grant's tomb?

General AND Mrs. Grant

Just a nit, but that's not correct. The real answer is nobody. Both of
them are entombed in Grant's tomb, but nobody is buried there. The
tomb is all above ground.

Since it brings up your menu, it must be the menu button.

I still call it the Start button, even though it isn't spelled out. I
also call the Taskbar the Taskbar and the System Tray the System Tray,
even though they aren't labeled, and never have been.

The car shop, in writing up my order, said, "What's the speedometer
reading?" I replied, "Why, zero, of course."

Both I and you are in danger of having our books knocked out of our
hands by the cool kids.

No big deal--another nit--but the System Tray has never been the
official name for it (although I call it that too). Just a bit of
trivia, but it was actually always called the "notification area,"
even way back in Windows 95. Despite what many people think, "System
Tray" wasn't its *former* name, just always an informal name for it.

Here's a Microsoft link to a Windows 95 page calling it the
"notification area":

I lost faith in MS's ability to give things suitable names when they
assigned "boot" and "system" to partitions as they did (backwards).

That is just odious...

Or Internet Explorer vs. Windows Explorer AKA My Computer...

Or Excel vs. Access.

Or an administrator vs. The Administrator.

Those are *some* of my pet peeves :)

The one that really burns me and continues to cause confusion
isn't from Microsoft: Java vs Javascript.

Yeah. I know the difference but still occasionally get confused
momentarily. And it's always tripping up beginners, as is often seen in
questions asked here.
