I like having e-mail and newsreader in one application,
It seems that the single applications always give up functionality to get the dual purpose, sort of like the disasterous
car/boat combos of the 1970s.

I have to say, Xnews was so awkward and non-user friendly I didn't
like it at all. But the whole reason for using Thunderbird and
Firefox is that are so configurable to suit (nearly) everyone.
Compared to Xnews, T'burp is almost non-configurable. As far a awkward
and non-user friendly I used it right out of the box with no help at
all. I'd rate it as the MOST user friendly and with the best support
possible from news.software.readers I was able to configure it to do
things you'd never EVER get T'burp to do. I've used both, I know
EXACTLY how non-configurable T'belch is. Nothing works as well that
I've found and there are few I haven't tried.

XS11E, it doesn't help your case when you use disparaging terms for
the newsreader you dislike.

Oh, and alt.comp.software.newsreaders is thataway -->

Just saying.

You're not the first person I've seen say that and I'm sure you won't
be the last. But personally, I've never understood that point of view.
Fair enough, that is your (and XS11E) right.
I want the e-mail program that works best for the way I work and I
want the newsreader program that works best for the way I work. If
they are both the same program, fine. If they are two different
programs, that's also fine. I no more want them both in the same
program than I want a word processor and a financial application in
the same program.
Some of us like the commonality of presentation between the two.

As for Office-type applications, some people like some commonality there
too, even if you don't. (Though whether the tendency for people to use a
spreadsheet when what they actually want it a table _may_ be partly due
to that. But I don't think so.)

Not me. Although I have some suites installed, I use what I think are
the best programs (best for me, anyway) in each suite, not all the
programs in a single suite. For example, although I have both
Microsoft Office and WordPerfect Office installed, I use the
WordPerfect word processor, but the Excel spreadsheet. I also use the
Outlook e-mail client, and FortÊ Agent for newsgroups.
