what am I missing

G

Gordon

No matter how I sort the posts in newsgroups I still have the OP's question
I sort on descending sent date and WLM 15 seems to work OK
putting the oldest post in a thread on top.

How did you manage the quoting in WLM?

on the bottom and the replies above in ascending order ie

Could someone please tell me how to reverse that order ie

etc
many thanks

Your message header says this, implying you're using Windows Live Mail Version 15.

"Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V15.4.3508.1109"

"I think I will switch to another usenet client."

And that is some sage advice.

How did you manage the quoting in WLM?
Quoting does not work in crappy WLM newsgeroup.
Install a decent newsreader and kill file anybody using WLM.

I don't kill WLM15 users, but I do mark their posts as read
automatically, so I generally don't see them unless they get replied to
by someone else (like this case), however Tom does seem to have taken
the time to manually insert quote characters ...

Believe it or not, Windows Mail, the worst newsreader EVER (excepting
maybe Thunderbird?) until Windows Live Mail, is available for Windows 7
and, although it's pretty awful for mail and even worse for newsgroups,
it's not as bad a WLM.

So if you prefer not to use a functional, GNKSA compliant newsreader
you can use Windows Mail in Windows 7, look here:

Not an issue with Windows 7 (or any version of Windows). The Windows
Live Mail (WLM) newsgroup is ...

.... thatta way ---> microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Although I don't know Thunderbird, I'll second everything else said
above. There are lots of better choices.

What do you have against Thunderbird? Does it screw up postings, or do
you just not like it as a reader? The first would be a public concern,
the second a matter of personal choice.

AFAIK it doesn't screw up postings too much but it's not very
configurable, the UI is awful, it's helpless at filtering although it's
better than it was.

It exhibits most of the failings of an email client that tries to be a
newsreader as well.

I personally liked it as an email client and found it totally
impossible as a newsreader.

Typically, when you click on a column heading in a panel, the contents
get sorted according to that variable.

Also typically (always, AFAIK), if you click a second time on the column
heading, the sort order is reversed from what it was.

I like having e-mail and newsreader in one application, and I guess I'm
not that fussy about what the newsreader can do. I only visit six groups
on three servers. I picked Thunderbird (v. 2) as a fairly close
approximation of Outlook Express.

Thankyou everyone for your replies.
It seems that there isn't many in favour of WLM so I might go with the flow
and change.
So far, as above, Thunderbird is a go. What do others like?

It's a "basic" newsreader, that handles quoting just fine.

Which means it's still better than WLM 15.

The filtering isn't wonderful, but it has to be the most configurable
program on the market by a mile. The use of extensions enables it to do
anything I managed to throw at it.

That shows how much it is really just a matter of personal taste. Its
failings as an e-mail client keep me having to use Outlook as well -
which is irritating. As a newsreader and RSS reader it's fine by me.
I've tried every standalone newsreader that's around, and only 40tude
Dialog is anywhere near as good as Thunderbird - for me.

You just HAVE to be kidding! Check my headers, Xnews is thousands of
times more configurable than T'belch!

I have to say, Xnews was so awkward and non-user friendly I didn't like
it at all. But the whole reason for using Thunderbird and Firefox is
that are so configurable to suit (nearly) everyone.

You're not the first person I've seen say that and I'm sure you won't
be the last. But personally, I've never understood that point of view.
I want the e-mail program that works best for the way I work and I
want the newsreader program that works best for the way I work. If
they are both the same program, fine. If they are two different
programs, that's also fine. I no more want them both in the same
program than I want a word processor and a financial application in
the same program.
