That's just too mundane! (older hats, that is)

When I was a young child (late 40's, early 50's, I sometimes played
with my grandfathers "Top Hat", a really old black dyed formal hat that
was sometimes worn with a cape and "evening dress", most often before WWII.
It had a spring loaded framework that allowed it to collapse, and was
made from some sort of animal pelt.

They are still viable, if used properly. The only serious weakness was
absent or poor crash protection. DOS is lean and mean, which why it
lasted a surprisingly long time in embedded software (as did OS/2). And
the later versions of DR-DOS, for example, did multitasking much better
than Windows.
