Start Menu Programs Placement?

New to Win7 - so still learning! On the Start menu in WinXP, after
starting a program, it will appear in the Start Menu Recent Program
List - Then if I wanted to keep it in the Start Menu - even when not
used recently, I could drag it to the top part of the bar and it would
be available all the time. I've done that with a few programs in
Win7, but when launching some programs, they do not appear in the
Recent Program part of the bar - so can't drag them up if I want.

One program is Quicken. I run it a lot and would like to have it in
the top part of the Start Menu, so I can just click it to start. but
it never appears in the bottom "Recent Programs" part of the bar, so I
cannot drag it up. Why does this program not appear in the Recent
Programs?

Thanks for any insights.

In your Start-Programs-Intuit-Quicken folder make Icons for each DATA
File you want to run from the start menu. Then click on each and select
"Pin to Start Menu". The drag the Icons in the start menu into the order
you want. Do not delete the icons from the Quicken folder.

Technically, you have a single Quicken icon. The other three point to
Quicken data files, not to the Quicken program.

I haven't done it, but you should be able to pin the actual Quicken
item to the Start Menu, then modify its Start In parameter.
Thanks - I think I worked out a way to get it there for the one of 3
files that I wanted there. Appears to be working now.
Thanks

I did that and have 3 icons for the 3 files, but when I right click on
each one, there is not "pin to.." option available on any of the icons
for the file, just on the default installation Quicken icon.

For the "file only" icons the command form should be
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Quicken\<file>.QDF

If you have the Pin To Start Menu option, use that. From what you describe
though, it would seem you are no creating a shortcut but actually moving
the programs icon to the desktop,
Or moving it, instead of copying it, to the desktop.

Not that I can see. I have 10 'recent' slots visible. MS Word is
second from the bottom, while the rest are non-MS applications.
Anyway, it's trivial to right click on any entry and elect to remove
it from the list entirely.
Nyah, nyah, nyah!

I also have ten, and none - None! - are Microsoft!

However, Excel is at the top, but that's because I pinned it there :)

Hmm. Should I go to the Confessional with that info?

Try my method. I just tested it on a text file and on a spreadsheet and
it works.

Hi, Char.

You know, of course, that you can change the number of "Recent" slots by
right-clicking Start | Properties. At the moment I'm running Win8, which
doesn't even have a Start menu like Win7, so I can't check the details. Oh,
wait; my netbook is running Win7 - Yes, right-click Start, click Properties,
then Customize on the Start Menu tab, and specify Number of recent programs
to display... The default is 10, I think, but the actual number depends on
the size and resolution of your display.

There are two sections to the Start Menu.
The top section for items pinned.
The bottom section for 'recent'

Pinned items can be relocated/moved up or down
- via the mouse

Yep, I knew that, but thanks. It may help others who might like to
change the defaults.

Not true.
I tried an experiment.

MS Word recently moved above another prorgram I use more frequently. I tried
opening the other program twice for every time I opened Word once, but Word
still stays on top.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is the first item in my Start Menu's 'Recent Opened programs'.
Opening Word or any other Office Program does not displace it or move any of the other programs (configured for 5 total) on the
recent listing.

Afaik....the method for the Recent programs hasn't changed much from XP to Win7. It's based on frequency. Just because something
was opened doesn't necessarily mean it will be added.

In the simplest terms, lacking any documented information from MSFT, when a program is opened it earns 'points' the more used the
more points, the less used the more points it loses.

The lack of information from MSFT afiak is to prevent 'gaming'...i.e. third party applications from using the algorithm to force
their program to the top of the list.

I don't know if you've found an answer to your question already, but it's really simple. All you have to do is drag the file's icon on top of the Start button and drop it there. It will then appear in the Start menu. The original file remains where it was. You are only dropping a copy onto the Start menu. The reason you don't see "Pin to Start menu" as an option when you right-click on the file's icon is because that option is only available for executable files (programs). It is not available for files. But the method I just described works like a charm. I use it all the time for the same Quicken data files that you described. I have several of them, too.
