SP1 question..

XS11E

I've been unable to install SP1 since it came out with the usual
"Unspecified Error" 80004005, translation, "We have no clue what went
wrong, love, Microsoft" I did all the various fixes found on MS forums
and elsewhere but no luck so..... I wiped drive C: and did a fresh
install and then installed SP1 with no problems or errors but I'm too
lazy to rebuild my system so I just recovered my current Acronis image
so SP1 was lost but it seems to prove my problem is a conflict with
some software I have????

So here's the question: What services/startup stuff is essential to
install the service pack? I tried running MSCONFIG to not start non-
microsoft services and stopped all startup except MS stuff but SP1
still failed to install, can someone give me any ideas as to what I
need to kill?

Did you look at possible errors logged in the two files during the SP1
install? Maybe, you'll get to the root of the problem.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

According to this, you could start by looking at cbs.log . There is
no guarantee any of it will make sense, but maybe cbs.log will give you
more search terms to work with.

Thanks, no errors.
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
Lots of errors but none that make any sense????

Correct, nothing that makes sense or seems related to the problem.

Also, remember the error is "unspecified" and MS can't define it. I'd
think the log would be helpful but if MS can't define the problem the
log may not offer sufficient info???

But the events in the log, may tell you what stage was the last to
complete. Even if the "thing" that failed, never left an entry.

Thanks but it says it completed AFICT.

Have you tried running sfc /scannow in a console, and then tried
installing SP1?

Yes. To save time, I've been at this for many hours, days, etc. I
started trying to install the RC version when it first came out and
there's nothing I've been able to find on the internet, MSFT forums,
etc. that I haven't tried.

One thing I have noticed, many on MSFT forums have been asked to post
the contents of the various logs, these logs have been examined by
supposedly competent folks but no fixes have resulted. Others have
recommended registry changes which I've tried but, again, no fixes.

Everyone, including me, seems to make it work by formatting and
installing a fresh Win7 but I'm not willing to invest the several days
it would take to rebuild the entire system so I'm still searching for a
fix...

OK, gotta do what I gotta do, currently rebuilding system after format
and re-install of Win7 64.

Thanks to all who replied, much appreciated.

I'm in the exact same boat, I've seen just about every "unspecified
error" condition that there is an entry for on Microsoft, and I'm no
closer to getting SP1 installed. On the bright side, I've run so many
repair tools and procedures, that the system's never run better, even if
it is still running just the non-SP1 Windows 7.

I'm about to try the in-place repair install procedure, which basically
brings the system back to original install conditions and patches, and
see if that helps:

I don't know what the SP-1 problem is, but -- I had problems with one
fairly clean new system that had Acronis 2010 installed. It also had had
a CCclean run, and passed all the "genuine" tests before I started
installing SP-1
After the install sort of completed, I had to go through the alternate
checking scheme to get it to say again that it was genuine. Eventually,
a second SP-1 install run was needed.

Another P/C running win 7 32, and relatively clogged with lots of
various games, other programs, test & development software, etc.
Flew through the SP-1 install.

Hmmm. I wonder if Acronis TI had anything to do with it. See final
comment on this page:

FWIW, I had a trial of ATI 11 installed, and installation of SP1 went
without a hitch.

Funny, I'd begun to think that myself. I was running an Acronis
restore of Windows 7 and it's clearly marked as such.

Anyway, format and re-install fixes dang near ANYTHING, it's duct
tape/bailing wire/WD-40 for PCs!

Unfortunately I'm only 1/2 way through rebuilding after spending all
day yesterday, still have bunched of stuff to install and I'm beginning
to remember just how MANY tweaks and fixes it takes to get Win7 into a
workable OS..... <sigh> ... that's what I'm working on now.

Currently, Acronis 2010 (single user) when installed, does leave
"footprints" on the backed up HD. Old (really old) versions didn't do
this. I don't know if the non install portable version does the same
sort of thing, or you can use command line features in the portable
version to help. I was/am not happy with the 2010 version, and when
necessity arises, likely go back to other backup methods/utilities.
Currently, we use a small HP dedicated server for automatic backup and
supplementary network storage. Now that the SP-1 installs have settled
down, I'll have to enable backups again.
