SendTo Problem - Only When Sending From Desktop

Years ago I had a free program that would record mouse movements and
clicks which I used to send someone a demo of how to do something.

We're talking around 1997 or 8, so I don't remember any more about it.

I can't even think of a good search term for Google. Screen demo
capture? Screen movies?
Try the Problem Steps Recorder:
C:\Windows\System32\psr.exe

That's a cool tool, but it is not a motion video. It doesn't capture
the desktop after the Send To, so it's not a help with this. The Send
To execution worked but the file icon on the desktop moved up about an
inch.

Gonna keep PSR in mind though for other things.

I did try it a few days ago when it was posted in this NG (maybe by
you?).

It's not at all like what I'm talking about. What I found was that psr
takes a series of snapshots which you can look at individually in a
browser (and it's Internet Explorer, which isn't my default browser) by
pressing a Next button, or by scrolling to the snapshots. Then you have
to read a bit of text to figure out what the snapshot represents. It's
not in any manner animated. I find it clumsy.

The others take what looks like - and plays like - a movie. It feels
like you're looking over the shoulder of the operator during the
sequence of events.

I agree with you about it being clumsy, but at least it's free. :)
I think this sort of program is probably more of what you had in mind:

Yes, that reads exactly like what I meant.

And my unpaid informant also suggested Snagit.

http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.html

I don't see a free version on the site. It's about $50 US, compared to
$20 for your suggestion.

Googling for "screen video recorder free" (I finally got a search term
to try!) gave me this:

http://download.cnet.com/Free-Screen-Video-Capture/3000-13633_4-10859265.html

and others that I didn't look at.

In sum, there seem to be options aplenty.

Ok, I made a video the old fashioned way - using a camera. It's an
AVI file about 4.2MB and has no artistic value since it's out of
focus. But, it does clearly show the icon (being sent via Send To )
jumping up as soon as I click on the location.

Now, where can I post it? Never posted anything except here on
usenet. Only watched youtube, don't know how to post there.
Youtube is fine. Create an account there, then you'll see an Upload
link. Click it and the rest is easy. Come back here and give us the
link.

I can't duplicate that here, and I've tried now on several Win 7
systems, including two Ultimate x64 and one Home Premium x64.

Most issues can be resolved, although some are trickier than others. I
wouldn't give up just yet, if it were me.

I'd love it if you could create a screen capture (video) and upload it
to youtube or somewhere, so I/we can see what's happening in real
time.

If you feel it's a serious enough issue to warrant a change of user
behavior, at least take comfort in the fact that there are multiple
alternative ways to accomplish the same thing. Who knows, you might
end up preferring one of the other ways, in the end.

I tried but couldn't find a link on Youtube to create an account. I
started to look at a Youtube video that supposedly shows how to do it
and couldn't understand the accent of the person who created it. I
gave up on that. It's more trouble than I can cope with now. If there
isn't an easier way to upload the video then I give up.

Extract two frames from the video.

Past them into a picture editor, side by side. One picture showing the
icon before, the other picture showing the icon after.

Post the resulting picture on imageshack.us . No registration
required. There are many other picture sharing sites that
will do this as well.

Thanks. I was speechless...
I did go to the YouTube site to see how it goes. It's not totally
obvious, so I spent a minute, maybe even two, looking around. Then I
just clicked on upload.

YouTube said I had to have a Channel to do it and presented me with the
necessary dialog.

Since I have nothing to upload, I didn't bother going any further, but
still, although as I said it's not obvious, well, it's not rocket
science either.

Click on the "Sign In" box at the top right of the screen, then, on the

I am not willing to jump through those hoops and enter personal info
just to upload 1 video that shows what I've been saying actually
happens. The icon moves on the desktop after sending the underlying
object to another folder via Send To. Seeing that happen will not
make a solution suddenly appear.
No, but it might help someone else EXACTLY what is happening. It
is always possible that you are leaving out data or not describing
things sufficiently accurately for anyone who tries to help. Your
problem might hinge on a seemingly-insignificant detail. Since you
will not provide the data, you get to live with your problem.
As I said, I'm not able to cope with this right now so thanks to those
who tried to help.
Given the long thread, doesn't it occur to you that you might be
going about things the wrong way?

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Ok, I purchased FastStone Capture and made 2 videos. It works great
for this.

They are here:

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit SP1, less than a month old and current on
updates.

Excellent videos! Thanks for doing that. Perhaps now the collective
group wisdom will kick in and someone will recognize what's causing
your icons to move around.

Besides FastStone Capture, what else have you installed?

Do the icons move if you Send To something other than Next Backup?
(What is Next Backup?) What is supposed to happen when you send things
to Next Backup? Do they get staged somewhere?
