SendTo Problem - Only When Sending From Desktop

D

DennyCrane

For years with XP I was using an addition to the SendTo folder that
would copy the item(s) being sent, to a folder named "Next Backup".
There, I'd collect items I wanted to burn to a disc at a later date.

I figured out how to do this in Win 7 and it works fine, except for
one issue.

When I select icons from the Desktop and right click on them to SendTo
Next Backup, the process works. But when it's finished, the icons
move upward on the desktop, about an inch. If an icon is near the top
of the desktop, it might move partially off of it.

This glitch makes an unwanted mess of things. Note that if I open
explorer to the desktop and select the icons there and do a SendTo >
Next Backup, they don't move on the desktop.

Any ideas?

Not trying to be pedantic or anything, but you're not really describing what
you're copying. An icon is a mere representation of the actual item.

From linfo.org:
"An icon is a small picture or symbol on a graphical user interface (GUI)
that represents a program (or command), file, directory (also called a
folder) or device (such as a hard disk or floppy). The term comes from the
Greek word eikon, which means likeness, image or portrait."

If you are copying files, say 'files', etc... To solve your problem, you
could download any one of a number of Desktop Restore programs, but you
would need to save your Desktop configuration every time you added an item.

An easier method IMHO, would be to use a folder on the desktop, collect your
items there, then simply open the folder and 'Sent To...' from there.

I am Sending (copying) files, shortcuts, and folders. Been doing it
for years with XP, both from any folder, drive or the desktop. Now
with Win 7, the items get copied as desired but when the source is the
desktop (files, shortcuts or folders), after the process is done, all
the source items (files, shortcuts or folders) "jump" up about an inch
or so.

I tried your workaround and that will do, but I wish I could determine
the cause of this undesired action and fix it.

Thanks,

DC

I just tried it to see what would happen on my own desktop. The shortcuts
snapped to different positions, some up, some down, randomly it seems. I
thought maybe I didn't have 'Align to grid' selected, and they were just
lining up, but that was not the case. I use Desktop Restore program, so
used that to put them back. Sorry I can't help you further with this one.

I normally only have 3 items on my desktop: Computer, Networking, and
Recycle Bin. So I put some shortcuts, some files, and a folder with
more files on my desktop. Next, I selected all of them and
right-clicked, selected Send To, and in my case I selected Volume 2,
which is my D: drive. Everything got copied to my D: drive as
expected, and my desktop stayed *exactly* like it was. Nothing moved
whatsoever.

Finally, I cleaned up by deleting all of the test items.

So, what have we learned? Darned if I know.

Absolutely nothing, I think... When I tested above, the shortcuts I used
were just dragged to random positions on the Desktop. Were yours aligned
with anything, or just randomly placed? I don't normally use 'send to' from
the Desktop, so it doesn't really affect me. It is a strange issue, though.

Yes, align to grid was enabled.

I don't use Send To very often at all, much less Send To from the
Desktop. I only have 3 items on my Desktop at any given time, and none
of those ever needs to be sent anywhere.

I have no idea why Send To makes the icons move for some people and
not for others. Maybe more people will try it so we can see which camp
is in the minority.

Does it depend on the setting of "Auto arrange icons"?

During my testing, I didn't have 'auto arrange' enabled and I'm too
lazy to do the test again. Did you check, and if so, what did you
find?

No. I do not use the desktop for storage.

It just occurred to me as a possibility.

I never have Auto Arrange Icons or Align To Grid, etc. checked (turned
on). I use the desktop as a work area for current things. When
finished I either delete them or use Send To a folder on a different
drive named Next Backup where they accumulate until I have enough to
burn to CD /DVD for permanent Storage. I use a different drive to
store them so their not lost if I have to do a System Restore.
Changing my ways after all these years is a pain. Thank you Windows
7.
What have you had to change? As far as I can tell, everything works
exactly like it always has.

Same here. Thank you Windows 7.

Although I would have used a comma...

Except that the icons representing the items just sent, via Send To,
move to a new location on the desktop. That does not happen for me
with XP, and never did. It's a new issue with my Win 7 Pro 64
machine. That's why I'll have to change my way of either copying or
moving items from the desktop to the Next Backup folder.

I can't duplicate that here, and I've tried now on several Win 7
systems, including two Ultimate x64 and one Home Premium x64.

Most issues can be resolved, although some are trickier than others. I
wouldn't give up just yet, if it were me.

I'd love it if you could create a screen capture (video) and upload it
to youtube or somewhere, so I/we can see what's happening in real
time.

If you feel it's a serious enough issue to warrant a change of user
behavior, at least take comfort in the fact that there are multiple
alternative ways to accomplish the same thing. Who knows, you might
end up preferring one of the other ways, in the end.

Wish I could do a capture video for you but at the moment I'm not
feeling well and don't have any idea on how to do that kind of
capture. Don't have much software loaded on the Win 7 PC yet.
You can do a screen capture without any special programs installed. Just
hit PrintScreen*. That will put an image on the clipboard. To convert it
to an image file, open Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint and paste the
clipboard image into it. Then you can save it as an image file.

*(Sometimes Shift-PrintScreen is required,)

Thanks. I guess I knew that but it would create an image file, not a
video showing the actual movement.
Years ago I had a free program that would record mouse movements and
clicks which I used to send someone a demo of how to do something.

We're talking around 1997 or 8, so I don't remember any more about it.

I can't even think of a good search term for Google. Screen demo
capture? Screen movies?
