also you say you connected to the LAN - was that wired or wireless? And have you tried the other one you didn't use or is that still needed as well?

All things considered, I'm not unhappy with how this new laptop is working at the moment. The Atheros driver I found allowed me to connect WIRED to the office LAN.

From there, the Windows Updates seemed to get the Realtek (WIRELESS) working.

The USB deal (it is an SD slot) is not that much of a problem.

I am not sure what the PCI simple communications controller is.

This is usually a fax modem, which you usually won't need as long as you can connect to the Internet through Ethernet or Wireless.

Further reading on the "pci simple communications controller" could also be a smart card reader.

Do you have a Card Reader that is not functioning properly?
