Scroll Lock

Is there a simple way to disable caps-lock (I missed the top of this
thread)? Last time I looked into doing it it was a hassle.

Yes. Here's the message I posted earlier:

"Personally, I never want caps lock to be on and I also don't want to
be in typeover mode. But because of their location, the caps lock key
and the insert key are keys I am prone to hitting accidentally. So I
have both turned off entirely. If you are interested in doing the
same, I recommend that you download and install the small, simple,
very easy to use, free program called SharpKeys at
http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/"

I run the 2 YO program with Win 7 Ultimate without any problems.

As do I. What the program does is very simple, so the fact that it is
old or the operating system new is really irrelevant.

And thanks for reposting my link, and sorry that I didn't see your
reply before reposting it myself.

I had never noticed this before, perhaps because my previous key board
that I used with Windows XP did not have a "Scroll Lock" key, but the
key produces some strange behavior, especially in Excel 2010. I have
been accustomed to entering about 6 values daily in a financial spread
sheet and I move from cell to cell with the arrow keys. Suddenly the
move stopped and the spreadsheet moved instead. It turned out that the
strangely named "Scroll Lock" had been pressed and this is apparently to
be expected.

The behavior of the Scroll Lock is documented in Windows Help and it is
a toggle.
Dear Diary,
You won't believe what I learned today. Scroll Lock! Excited doesn't
begin to describe how I feel right now! Next week I plan to discover
the Insert key, and after that I may venture over to Num Lock!
Yours,

What the hell does scroll lock actually do?

Yours,
You just don't get around enough: I really have used a Logitech wireless
key board without a "scroll lock" key for years.

I suppose I might read that but I've got along pretty well without
Scroll Lock for years and I can't see any reason for it in my use of Excel.
Hmm, your excitement at discovering this newfangled Scroll Lock key
seems to have diminished somewhat. Time for a new diary entry!

The only thing I use Scroll Lock for is switching a USB switch to
different systems. On keyboards without the key I have to press the
function key and F12 twice to get the same level of control.

I'm with you; I never use it either and don't see any real need for
it. But if you haven't seen how differently the arrow keys behave with
it on in Excel, try it. I remember the first time I saw it; I hadn't
realized that I had accidentally hit the scroll lock key, and was very
surprised and confused by what was happening.

Exactly, me too (or have I said this already?)
