Scroll Lock

I had never noticed this before, perhaps because my previous key board
that I used with Windows XP did not have a "Scroll Lock" key, but the
key produces some strange behavior, especially in Excel 2010. I have
been accustomed to entering about 6 values daily in a financial spread
sheet and I move from cell to cell with the arrow keys. Suddenly the
move stopped and the spreadsheet moved instead. It turned out that the
strangely named "Scroll Lock" had been pressed and this is apparently to
be expected.

The behavior of the Scroll Lock is documented in Windows Help and it is
a toggle.

Nothing like the old IBM XT that had no "num lock" light......I would be
using Multimate (a spreadsheet) and if the num lock was OFF and you
pressed the "end" key, thinking you were going to enter the figure 1, it
shot literally to the end of the spreadsheet....Column ZA Row 65556 or
however many it had, showing a totally BLANK screen! Very disconcerting...

My OWN PROBLEm is wiht the cAPS lOCK key :)

For a while recently I was using a wireless keyboard which, to save
battery usage, didn't have indicator lights.

Eventually I tracked down some utilities that put up indicators
on-screen. That helped a lot.

Some of those utilities are TrayStatus, CapsLockLight, and NumCapsScroll
Indicator. Unfortunately, I recently organized my shortcuts, so I can't
find any links at the moment...

I tried a few and settled on one that I liked, but I've forgotten which
one that was.

Yep, that's been that way for many Excel versions back, so long I can't
remember when it didn't do that.

My Dell Inspiron laptop has no indicators for Cars Lock *or* Num
Lock. According to
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/990/pg18/dell-inspiron-15r-
core-i3-i5-laptop-review-conclusion.html
this is typical of newer Dells.
Neither does my Logitech wireless keyboard, possibly to avoid battery
usage. I wonder if there is some sort of app or indicator for these (and
scroll-lock too) that could be shown in the task bar? I'm not willing to
give up wireless.

Ah! Sorry to reply to my own post but a search indicates that there is
such a thing: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/traystatus.html

It looks good, has anyone tried it?

Do you just want to know when the caps lock key is on, or would you
prefer to completely disable it?

Personally, I never want caps lock to be on and I also don't want to
be in typeover mode. But because of their location, the caps lock key
and the insert key are keys I am prone to hitting accidentally. So I
have both turned off entirely. If you are interested in doing the
same, I recommend that you download and install the small, simple,
very easy to use, free program called SharpKeys at

I have my Win7 make a bleep sound whenever I press a lock key. I used to
hit the caps lock accidentally quite a lot in place of the shift.

Go into Ease of Access Centre, Change How Keyboard Works, Toggle Keys.

Traystatus almost loaded, I think, but the Cps Lock indicator did not
come on even if the icons were in the "Customize" pane. I also had a
devil of a job uninstalling the program since it was alleged that parts
were still there. I had to go to Customize and delete each of the
apparent icons before I could remove the folder....fergetabatit!

OK. Your choice, of course.
Is there a simple way to disable caps-lock (I missed the top of this
thread)? Last time I looked into doing it it was a hassle.

thanks for that. I'e downloaded it and sent it to the windows machine
where I will give it a go and see how it does. I'm a tad bit concerned
it's over 2 years old and a registry hack, so I'll have to see waht it's
doing in Windows 7 before running it.
I disabled caps-lock & insert, marvelous.
I detest the caps-lock key and really do not understand why it exists.

When I need to type something in all caps I either hold the shift key
down, or use a service to convert text to caps (on OS X, not on
windows).

I run the 2 YO program with Win 7 Ultimate without any problems.
