--- Posting Hints ---

ALWAYS REVIEW your message before submitting it. You want someone OTHER
than yourself to understand your post. Also remember that no one here
is looking over your shoulder to see at what you are pointing. If you
don't well explain your situation by providing the DETAILS that you
already know, don't expect others to know what is your situation.
Explain YOUR computing environment and just what actions you take to
reproduce the problem - and describe the problem so OTHERS know of what
you are asking for help.

Often you get just one chance per potential respondent to elicit a reply
from them. If they skip your post because you gave them nothing to go
on (no details, no versions, no OS, no context) then they will usually
move on to the next post and never return to yours.

BTW, I e-mailed my youngest son in PA with the same identical question I
sent to the newsgroup. He phoned the in-law and corrected the problem in a
few minutes. The solution was simple. The problem is corrected.
Perhaps you'd be willing to help any others with the problem by telling
them how your youngest son solved it.

My hunch is the owner was told to press the enter key with a blank
password line.

Me, too, but I think Senor Petulant isn't going to tell us, out of
spite.

Nil and Dominique provided the most informative answers.

The system was purchased for price at Wal-Mart. Documentation is minimal,
nearly non-existent. My son suggested to power down completely, reboot and
look for a prompt during reboot. He found F12 listed on the screen which
provided access to the initial "user" sign in screen. The rest is simple.
Follow the cues. The system is up and running.

My brother-in-law is in his mid 70's, just a few years younger than myself.
Computers are perplexing to him, but he is a gentleman who asked me to find
help in a newsgroup. I will NEVER do that again. Read the replies. With rare
exception, all have a negative attitude with the exception of Nil and
Dominique. My thanks to them.

In your world with purple skies, someone speaking neutrally is perceived
by you as hostile.

Well, I think some were neutral.

The main offender in this thread has been Vanguard - whose impatience
with someone like yourself new to posting (you _did_ give not a lot of
detail initially, but still ...) has made me wonder about killfiling
him, but (in my relatively brief time here) I have seen one or two posts
from him that are useful, so I haven't yet.

Don't give up on newsgroups/usenet just because of one or two posters. I
would have helped myself if I knew more about 7.
