Yes, if you go to the Installation screen you can choose Start-up repair from the bottom left corner.

You could also try just opening an administrator command prompt in your current Windows and running "sfc /scannow". That runs System File Checker to make sure your OS files aren't corrupt/damaged.

I can't guarantee either will fix what you described though; as that could also be a problem with your registry or with your hard drive. If it's the hard drive then your HD needs replaced. If it is the registry then you can try restoring to an old restore point but if it still doesn't work with the oldest restore point you have then your only options are an old image (if you created one) or to completely reinstall W7.

Bige4u, Windows Explorer is not the same as IE so your statement doesn't really fit with the current conversation. Please try to stay on topic.

Appreciate the fast response. Sfc /scannow found no errors, I'm going to look though image files on ext HD to see if I have one older than 1 month.

Error

I put it on a flashdrive, put that in, turned the computer on, and I'm getting the error message: missing operating system. Any advice?

How did you put it on the flash drive? You can't simply copy the ISO onto a flash drive to make it useable.

The ISO must be expanded so it is many many files, not a single ISO. You can use the W7 USB/DVD Download Tool to make the USB Flash drive "bootable". And then your computer must be set so the USB is the first boot device (I do this through the BIOS on mine but some also allow you to change boot device during POST).

I ended up converting it, used FreeISOBurner, and got as far as to where I want to install it. Then I keep getting the error message 'Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing partition. See the Setup log files for more information.'

I've tried adding partitions, deleting all partitions so it says 'Disk 0 Unallocated Space,' but nothing changes. All of the youtube videos I have watched dont get the error.

One more question I have, that might explain why it isn't working. Do you already have to have windows installed? I just built my computer, and My friend told me I could just install Windows from here. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll just have to go buy it for $120.

If you install it without a key then it can't be activated so it will stop working in 30 or 60 days (I can't recall which) so yes you will need to buy a copy.

However your install issue sounds more like a hard drive problem. Is the hard drive brand new, because if it ever had LINUX on it then GRUB needs to be removed for windows to use the drive.

Or how big is the hard drive? If it is 2TB or more then you probably need special drivers loaded before Windows 7 can use it.

Windows 7 Ultimate installation

I am in the process of building a new computer. On my old computer, I had a genuine Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit operating system. My new system is a 64 bit Ultimate system. I downloaded the correct iso file that you had posted. I am running an SSD as my boot drive and I have a combo blueray/dvd burner. When I put the iso disk in, it seems to read everything okay at first, but when it gets ready to actually copy files, I get an error message that it is missing a cd/dvd driver and can't load. I have tried everything I can think of - I even tried installing the Window 7 home edition OEM that I loaded on one of our other computers and it installs just fine - seems to be only the iso disk that I downloaded from you site. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Brent

First off, you didn't download it from our site; those are links to digital river which is the official company authorized to provide Microsoft's digital distribution.

If you need a driver not included on the W7 installation DVD then check the manufacturer's website on how to load the driver before W7 installation.

My reply was for bftrimble.

Bus, do you actually get the W7 Installation menu to show up from the USB stick? The reason I ask is because USB 3 is new and support often is not there from the W7 Installation software. You may either need to use a USB 2.0 port or preload drivers so USB 3 works - otherwise it likely does not see your USB 3.0 flash drive and so it keeps going down the boot order at which point it tries to look for a CD/DVD drive and that is when you get your error.

My desktop is running an OEM install of W7 but there was no disk when i bought my desktop. I do have an activation sticker though.

sadly, i need to reformat my harddrive. Would i be able to wipe my harddrive and install the corresponding version of W7? Even after reading all 20 + pages I ask because there seems to be some ambiguity with OEM installs.

Thanks,

If you reinstall the same version and bit size you should be fine but one person mentioned there laptop with SLIP did not activate automatically. If you run into that I suggest you key in your product key and attempt to activate; to my knowledge the other user never tried doing that.

I've never heard of it not working but there has been a question of legality raised with OEM versions if you were to change from 32 to 64-bit or visa versa.

If your computer came with Ubuntu, you need to purchase a legal license for Windows to install on that notebook.
