Noisy hard drive

A simple non- tech method to tell which drive is making the noise is to open
the PC case, start the operation, and hold a non-metallic screw driver on the
case of one drive and place the other end near your ear. You will hear if that
drive's head(s) are banging around. It could be both drives making the noises.

Or a stethoscope or, better still, an obstetrician's ear-trumpet should
tell you if the drive is labouring :)

I ran the Error-checking tool and set it to automatically fix file
system errors and also scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

The process went smoothly, but I did hear the hard drive clucking
sound a few times. When completed the pop-up window indicated there
were no problems and the disk was ready to use.

The clucking sounds being present while checking Drive D: seems to
have narrowed this problem down to that hard drive. I will run the
same Error-checking tool on Drive C: this afternoon and see what
happens.

I'm thinking this is a near-bad sector that requires several tries by
the read-write function to get the data onto the hard drive on those
marginally bad sectors.

I have to reinforce the idea mentioned a few times to get the drive
manufacturer's drive test utility or a SMART utility (or both) and run
it (or them) against the drive.

If it were my system, I would probably back the drive up and replace it
without the tests, but that's just my paranoia speaking.

WD probably has a diagnostics program you could download and check out
the drive, but I'd start saving for a replacement.

All the dead hard drives I have sitting around here are WD. Never any
trouble with Seagate.

All my dead drives are 'White Label'.

I got a dead IBM "deathstar" here ;-)

I have an old stethoscope found in a junk sale, and I use this to test
for noises. The HDDs give a whirring noise and faint clickity-burp
when working properly.

Look at the datestamps. You thought that any of the original
participants or the OP were still monitoring this 10 MONTH OLD thread?

He's replying to a post from Peter Jason dated 08132011, not the
original post of 10 months ago. Quite a difference.

Correct; and like my newsreader, VLH's probably makes new posts easy to
see...

But from November 16 to August 12 is only 9 months, so we can still
tease VanguardLH a bit :)

You're right, it is only nine months old; I should have done my own
math. Thanks for the correction and now I can see where it is
acceptable to tease VanguardLH. Thanks for pointing that out ;-)

I was going to grumpily reply "Oh dear, I thought I'd left behind in the
newsgroups for the older OSs people who have nothing better to do than
wait and pounce on anyone who replies to an old thread", and also point
out that such (reply) posts are still of interest to current readers,
but then:
made me smile instead!

Yes, let's tickle him; maybe the laughter will cheer him up. (And
besides, 9 _or_ 10 months isn't long; his counterparts in '9x/XP 'groups
found people replying to posts that were _years_ old.)

A couple of years ago, in a doctor's waiting room (in a large hospital),
I was reading a magazine, and noticed that things seemed a bit dated.

I looked at the cover: the magazine was 15 years old.

My reaction to that was to laugh heartily, which got me a few suspicious
looks from the other patients-in-waiting.
