That would be the problem then. Digital Output is the higher quality and
therefore may have been selected. Also if the driver was installed when
there were no speakers plugged in (some audio cards can detect what is
plugged in) then speakers would not have been the initial selection.
Do try selecting Speakers as default.

Have you tried booting from some linux live CD to see if it works there?
That might narrow it down to hardware.

The OP fixed it...by uninstalling reinstalling drivers.
Linux and sound are oxymorons.
