Newreader question

Ken Blake

I want to thank all of you for your prompt response.
Basically, Microsoft had a good Newsreader with OE (I'm very happy with it),

Personally I think Outlook Express was a decent newsreader, but far
from a great one. There are several better choices.

but they chose to screw up a good thing.

I don't think that they "chose" to, but I agree that, if you are
talking about Windows Live Mail, in many respects they did. I don't
like Windows Live Mail at all.

It almost sounds like I'd be better pff just sticking with XP.

Your choice, of course, but I don't think you'd be better off. First
of all, if you are talking about Windows Live Mail, please be aware
that it is *not* part of Windows 7.

Windows 7 comes with *no* e-mail or newsgroup program. Although many
people object to this, I think it's a step in the right direction,
since it leaves everyone more free to choose whatever program(s) he
likes best. There are many choices available, both from Microsoft and
from third-parties. Some are free and some are for sale. Microsoft has
Windows Live Mail (which is essentially also a newer version of
Outlook Express/Windows Mail, with still another new name) available
for download for free and Outlook (a different program from outlook
express) available for sale, either alone or as part of Microsoft
Office.

Some people will tell you to use Windows Live Mail; others will tell
you to use Thunderbird; still others may have other recommendations.
My advice is to ignore all such recommendations. I personally use
Microsoft Outlook for e-mail and FortÊ Agent for newsgroups, but you
should try several and choose what *you* like best, rather than make
your decision based on what I, or anyone else, likes best (or even
what Microsoft suggests).

Agent is more than a decade old but still serves me well.

Although the original Agent is more than a decade old, the current
version (6.0) is nowhere near that old. I can't remember its exact
age, bit it's somewhere around a year old.

And like you, I like it a lot. I recommend to Hagar that he at least
give it a try.

Nah, there are fat better dedicated news readers out there that are
superior to OE IMO.

You mean you won't plonk people who don't use the reader you like?
You're a better man than some! ;^)

If there is no Newsreader available in Win 7, what would be my options,
other than going with a decade old Forte Agent alternative.
Just to add another to the list of options for you to explore, I like
Microplanet Gravity. It's free.

My Agent.exe 6.00/32.1186 has a date of 18-Nov-2009.

I didn't check before, but I just did, and mine has the same date.

But regardless of whether it's 11/2009 or 7/2010, my statement that
it's approximately one year old is close to right. The point is that
it's nowhere near a decade old.

I think it tends to be the other way round, Tom. People *plonk* the one
(and even more so it's recent variations) that is a total pain in the butt,
and are quite happy with all the rest.

The down side is you will hear
a lot of bitching in some groups if you use the MS reader, Windows Live
Mail.
Deservedly so.

It messes up quoting so badly that I (among many) often give up trying
to figure out what is the reply and what is the quoted material, and
just go on to the next post.

That does help speed up my newsgroup reading, though :)

But it's not just that one post; it ruins all the posts that come after.

So don't reply to the WLM 15 users, then there are no posts that come
after to be ruined.

Very true this. It makes a complete mess of the posts. If you are not
going to support something properly, why bother at all. They should have
just removed NNTP support from WLM rather than go with the half ass
implementation that's there now.

Yeah. So guess what?

Hint: I skip them too.
I think I'll start doing the same.... maybe if everyone ignored anyone
who posts using WLM 2011 they'll think that it doesn't work and try
something else on their own... (wishful thinking). :)

My version 2 is approaching a decade, but your version 6 is current.
I use a very old version of Agent also. It's on my XP machine and I
never use it for binaries, it can't handle the bigger groups. But,
it's Free Agent and a very good newsreader.
