McAfee came with a couple of months' free use, and I've left it in just for
the fun and ride. I'll install AVG or maybe MSE when it expires.
Don't forget to track down the full uninstaller on the McAfee site!

I *am* making an assumption here (I think I read it somewhere) that
like Symantec, the normal uninstallation process won't do the trick
with McAfee, so you have to find & use the heavy hitter software from
their site.

I suspect you knew this, but maybe someone else could use the info.

Yes, I knew that and I've got the uninstaller bookmarked.
Thanks for the tip though.

This lot of people here;

seem pretty certain it's WLM and other Windows Live Essential programs.

Yes, they finally started appearing; and immediately after I'd said yes
to the Windows Live form. I had already used WL Mail without being
asked, but today I clicked on WL Writer and up came the form.
A pair appeared straight away with a two seconds' gap in timing.

A better hypothesis

I appreciate that a lot of people like to help others who are stumped. Frequently we solve problems by trying many of the proposed solutions and sometimes get it right. I like the idea that most of these proposed solutions start with "Have your tried...". It would be nice if there were a radio button one could post on the reply with values of
1) I know exactly what this is and how to resolve it
2) I had the same or similar problem and solved it like this
3) Here's something else you could try
4) I really don't have a clue what I'm talking about but maybe this is it

The "randomly" numbered directories are the results of program install, uninstall and update activity. Fortunately a lot more programmers are cleaning up after themselves instead of leaving files all over your drive. Unfortunately there is no programmer yet than can predict how his install, update or uninstall is going to perform in every circumstance. That's when they don't take out the trash.

I have never had a problem removing these.

Here is my final solution for everything:
1) Create a restore point
2) Play/Work with all the creativity and intuition you can muster
3) If you experience that "oops" sensation, restore back to the point you created.
