How do MS-Win users do this?

That explains so why I like you so much. As I never wanted to be a
programmer at all. But I was an electronic engineer who fell into
designing computers in the 70's and 80's. Not consumer grade stuff, but
for the military and then later for the professional market.

But all of the famous people like Gary Kildall, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs,
Steve Woz, and heaven forbid even Bill Gates were doing was just child's
play compared to what I was doing. But all I got was a paycheck.

And back then before a programmer could fully understand your hardware,
it was far easier to tackle the software and to do it yourself. You know
for testing purposes at least. I got better and better at it of course.
And I didn't care how sloppy my programming was, just so I could
understand it was all that mattered.

I was really picky about bugs though. As I could see bugs appearing
while I was programming. So I could fix them right away. I only have one
regard that I knew of if somebody used one program right at the start
just seconds before midnight, one varaible would be off by one day. I
let that one slide as I thought nobody would do that anyway. And to my
knowledge nobody ever did. ;-) But I lost sleep over that one. :-(
I DO believe you Bill. Pay no attention to these sour-grapers here!

No it was an amazing time back then. And we were all amazing! Sending
men to the moon and all. And the only people that could use computers
were the computer elite. But times are different now. We can't send
anybody to the moon anymore and the power of computers have been
released to the masses.

Now wait a second! I know I am not making this up. Now I
need to know why it isn't working for me.
Like I said......you're a 2%'er.

You don't f'up this stuff purposely. It just "happens".

This is another _perfect_ example.

You have this problem no one's ever reported with Notepad, yet you believe it's a
widespread notepad problem that everyone else suffers from (but in reality, have never
even heard before).

I certainly encountered it with old Notepads ('95 and probably '98); I
got into the habit of loading an alternative (usually NotePad+), so
don't know if it's a problem with XP's notepad. There's the size
limitation too, which _has_ gone away (or at least up?) in XP. I don't
have a 7 machine to hand, but since it seems lots of people _didn't_
have the wraps-being-saved problem in XP, one would hope that the fix
was maintained into the 7 version.

Either you're *really* inattentive, or you're ... well, "lying" is
such an ugly word, so let's say "knowingly making an inaccurate
statement".

Your statement that "if affects everybody" is inconsistent with the
fact that multiple people have posted right here that Word Wrap is
view only in Windows XP and Windows 7.

What do you mean Dan? When you see your 5282 line text file (which had
taken years to create) suddenly seeing word wrap adding CR/CR/LF to your
document after a save, you freak-out a bit. And it also affects copy and
paste too. And if you are not careful, you can have your document
formatting changed.

And the meaning it affects everybody, means everybody has Notepad with
this bug in it. Are you really that inapt? Or are you "knowingly making
an inaccurate statement"?

And...if it's not *saved that way*, as reported, how do you come up with.....

........"Not for me, Notepad destroyed many of my file formatting because of forgetting to
turn wrap off before saving. I never tried it under Windows 7, but XP and under it did."

Once and for all.......you are saying that......

....saving a file w/Notepad screws it up if it's saved with word-wrapping turned on?

(...so subsequently, when you re-open the file, either in Notepad or in something else,
you need to fix the formatting)

Even though, both of your cites as proof say...

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/162087-notepad-wordwrap-bug-
double-spacing.html :

"If word wrap is on when you save, Notepad inserts CR CR LF characters at each
wrap point in the display window (but not in the saved file)."

....and..

http://bavih.blogspot.com/2008/07/notepad-bug.html :

"The CR CR LF characters are only in Notepad's display window. The CR CR LF
characters were not saved in the text file. The long wrapped lines were saved
unbroken."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(There's actually another bug I've found in Notepad recently myself......while Notepad
will properly "see" a <cr><lf>, it does not "see" a <lf><cr>, and subsequently only
shows a double box graphic where it occurs interpreting them as unprintable ascii
characters, instead of line feeding and carriage returning.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But I digress....word-wrap was the issue......

I'm not going back and forth with you with this.

Either yes or no.

You are saying this bug does indeed save files like this?

YES or NO.

(No other answer is acceptable.)

(And stop writing my name when you reply...it feels creepy.)

(Like the "old man parked in front of the elementary school in his van" creepy.)

I can't believe you are so inept! Here let me hold your hand for you. I
routinely in the past used Notepad as a text scratchpad (not anymore at
least). And I learned to save often. So I copy and paste to and from
many times. And after a save, the formatting is now changed and
destroyed some of my files between copying and pasting. Now do you
understand?

Hell here is what Notepad did to my paragraph above:

Can you describe the ways in which you find Vim superior to
Notepad?
Yes, and to take a simple non-programming example I use Vim as the
standard editor in my email client (Alpine). It's easy in Vim to
reformat paragraphs, take account of quoted reply text (<), spell
check, and so on, things you can't do in notepad. OK the spell check
uses another program but it's all seamless. If I wanted to I could
easily set Vim to display both the first few lines and lines from,
say, number 100 on the same screen.

Oh please. Windows includes many application programs. Indeed, it
seems to be part of Microsoft's strategy to obscure the difference
between an operating system and an application program.

Would you have been happier if I had said "the application that is
included with native Windows, called Notepad"?
Or you could have just written "Notepad is not..."

Sincerely,

You failed to notice that in the first link, the poster said "when I
copy-paste some lines of text from Notepad into Wordpad".

That is to be expected, since you are copying text *from the display*.
It is *not* the same as changing formatting when saving a file...

BTW, when I reported that I did an experiment that shows that I don't
have this problem, I did it with Notepad in Windows 7, and I did the
experiment *after* reading your post...

I didn't bother looking at your second URL, so I won't comment on it.

Win 7 here. No reformatting problem here. This is by actual experiment
after reading BillW50's first complaint...

Yes, I understand that you apparently don't look at anything you copy-and-paste into
another program before saving it.

I also understand that you will typically make some claim about something, in a very
general way, and then as you are challenged about it, you keep adding more and more
details in hopes of being right.
