How do I run Windows 7 in XP mode?

It looks to me like we agreed, but didn't realize it :)

Thanks: you have reminded me that I have to remember to boot into XP
today to fix a new problem with my remote control (whose software
requires XP). Every time I start XP in VMplayer, it takes what feels
like an hour to get all the software updated, since I run it so
infrequently.
Has anyone managed to get Microsoft to activate XP Mode running under a
different hypervisor? The packaging clearly says that it is licenced to
run under virtualisation technology /such as/ Windows Virtual PC.

I do have it running under VirtualBox 4.x very nicely, but that involves
binary editing of the BIOS files provided by VirtualBox, the standard XP
activation won't work over the internet, or by the phone method, even
when re-entering the proper licence key, obviously they've tied it to
details in the VPC BIOS (I gather VMware player can fake it too).

I've paid for Ultimate to get a properly licences XP Mode, I'd like to
have it activated without any kludges ...

Interesting question, but I'm not sure I trust my skills enough to try
the experiment :)

Anyone else got the courage?

I have XPmode running under VMware Player and it was easy. Just click
on File and you'll see a menu item that says something like Import XP
Mode VM. Then just sit back and wait a few minutes while it brings in
XP Mode into your VMware player. Works like a champ and it even passes
any Windows Genuine Advantage checks.

Yes, I was lead to believe VMware player could make its BIOS look like
the Virtual PC BIOS as far as activation was concerned, of course that's
what I've done to VirtualBox's BIOS, but blatting a specific string of
bytes are a particular DMI address probably isn't too friendly to
whatever bytes happened to be there beforehand ...
