How big is SP1?

C

I wonder if, for that day, Netflix's share of Internet bandwidth will
drop below 25%, as every Windows user tried to download SP1. :)
I probably won't download it for my XP systems. ;-)

But they usually send something that is totally unlike a normal
Windows 7 DVD.
At least for some models they supply a normal Windows 7 DVD. I know,
because I use them to build clean system images for the PC models we
use at our company. So far that is limited to their Optiplex and XE
lines, I don't know about their consumer models.

Thanks for the thought. I hate to sound ungrateful, but, ...

Though I can't be certain from the wording of the article, it
doesn't
sound like a Windows 7 installation disk. It sounds like a disk
that
wipes the hard drive and returns it to factory condition (which I
already have).

Notice also that they say they are not just continually adding
drivers but continually dropping them. Thus after using this
recovery disk you may find some of your hardware doesn't work any
more.
Sure, but just download the current drivers for your model from their
website and put them on USB drive and you should be in good shape.

Oh, come on, Char, be a sport!

(But I liked Stan Brown's reply better than my own.)

Perhaps I spoke too quickly. I'll go ahead and download a copy of
Windows 7 SP1 for each of my XP systems. ;-)

Welcome to the 21st century! It'll be nice to have you on our team.

One of my computers is a netbook with Win 7 Starter Edition, so I don't
know if it'll work from the same DVD. I'll just try the DVD, and if it
fails, I'll D/L the proper version.

Isn't it funny how trivial it has become to transfer large amounts of
data across the Internet? I have no doubt that people with multiple
computers will download the Service Pack multiple times, once for each
computer. How times have changed, eh?

No DVD for me, I'll burn up some bits by downloading.

Thus saving heating-fuel costs?

I'll probably try the DVD in the netbook just to learn from the
experiment. Unless I change my mind...

I noticed a Windows update icon in my system tray today & I wonder if
it's SP1 - but I decided to wait until I'm done wasting some more
bandwidth on Usenet :)

I just updated Win 7 SP1 on both desktop and laptop which were
otherwise up to date. 1x64bit 1x32 bit.

Each was only 86meg. So provided that have your normal updates done it
is not too big.

I have SP1 and 3 other updates downloading -- on another machine --
right now: only 61.8MB altogether, perhaps because I've already
installed many of the updates that are included in SP1.

This is very useful; thanks. After much agonizing, I set Windows
updates to automatic, so I suspect ,y download won't be too large
either. I'll not burn a DVD after all.

It wasn't too bad here, Stan. Mine is downloading now, 88.9Mb, including
three other small updates. It downloaded 22% of it, then sat there for a
while with a lot of disc activity, now it's downloaded up to 91%, and the
HD is churning away again. Total time so far about a quarter of an hour, if
that. It's at 94% as I press send.

I sincerely doubt that!!
You sincerely doubt what?
Where on earth did you hear that tidbit?? I
was talking to a friend in the UK and they don't have to pay or order it
by mail, so why would we have to??? She downloaded it earlier this week.

And your less than gentlemanly comments about usage based billing don't
affect me at all. I believe I have 6 gig/month free, but OTOH, I don't
download videos.
I downloaded and installed SP 1 yesterday Heather, if you continue to
top post people will have problems answering your posts.

Please don't post upside down.

I will try once again..........

I was referring to the OP who said that we in Canada had to pay for SP1,
etc. And I will try not to offend the group's delicate sensibilities due
to top posting. That is the way I did it on the MS groups and it is a
hard habit to break.

Thank you for making the effort.

It's also important yo trim quoted material to just the part you're
replying to. That starts with trimming away signatures, of course.

You might want to have a look here for some (ahem) suggestions:
