How big is SP1?

B

Bob Hatch

Just wondering how large this Service Pack is. I'm using Verizon
Wireless for my internet connection and will have to update 2 computers.
If it's big, I'd like to download the Service Pack once and install it
on both computers.

Any guesses, or facts?

Assuming the final release is the same as the release candidate:

7601.17105.100929-1730-3_Update_Sp_Wave1-RC1SP1.1_DVD.iso 1875.2MB
windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe 865.4MB

Holy Jupiter! I don't think I want to try downloading a Gigabyte
through my home internet; I'd rather download it at work where they
have a much faster connection and burn it to a DVD.

My Windows at home is activated; can I expect a problem if I install
SP1 on a different computer from the one where I activated it?

Here's the contents of the production release ISO downloaded yesterday from
MSDN:

It's about 2GB. And yes, you can download it once, burn it to a DVD,
and install it on multiple computers.

I can also report that the installation went very smoothly, and took
about 30 minutes here. And although I haven't yet seen any differences
with it installed, I haven't had any problems either.

If you download the whole file, it will install SP1 on _any_ PC.
You can also Slipstream it with the base Windows 7 DVD.

I slipstreamed service packs into systems in the past, but it was never
a simple process. Is there some painless way to do it with Windows 7?

Was there no option to just download the specific update file that you
required for a particular architecture.

For instance when I put SP1 RC on my 32 bit Home Premium system I downloaded
windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe, which was approx 515 MB.

Thanks; I'll download the ISO.

I could slipstream it if I *had* a Windows 7 DVD, but I have a Dell
computer. (But are there any manufacturers that do still supply
Windows installation disks?)

Thanks guys. Now, can I download the ISO file now, or do I have to wait
until the 22nd?

The only package currently available to MSDN and Technet subscribers is the
complete ISO with all three packages.

My expectation (based on how Microsoft has distributed service packs in the
past) would be that you will have the option to download the full update kit
for your flavor of Windows 7 once the update is generally available next
week.

Both.
You can download the Release Candidate now.
You can download the SP1 Release-To-Manufacturing after the 22nd.

I'd wait.

If you're a subscriber to MSDN or Technet, or are an OEM, you can download
the files now.

Otherwise, no, unless you download it from a non-Microsoft site. I don't
recommend that unless you've got strong affirmative reason to trust the
site, but if you must get it that way at least check the hash of the files.

Microsoft publishes that SHA1 hash of the ISO on the MSDN and Technet
download pages, along with the CRC of the ISO:

SHA1: F2ABA1102E18EAD08C78527AB422C09AB7D1F54C ISO/CRC: B07748AE

And yes, I verified the hash against what was downloaded. It matches.

Here are the hashes of the files on the DVD, which presumably will be the
same as files to be downloaded from Microsoft:

MD5 SHA-1

But, of course, why should you trust any security information anyone offers
here? There are some people on USENET who know me professionally, and whom
I know similarly; I'll trust their information, but only if I can verify
that they actually posted it...and I doubt that either of us knows the other
except through these messages. Sadly, a healthy dose of paranoia is
necessry these days. Caveat emptor and all that.

Unless you have an MSDN or Technet subscription, you have to wait
until 2/23.

Thanks. That's the date then. :)
I wonder if, for that day, Netflix's share of Internet bandwidth will
drop below 25%, as every Windows user tried to download SP1. :)

Thanks for the thought. I hate to sound ungrateful, but, ...

Though I can't be certain from the wording of the article, it doesn't
sound like a Windows 7 installation disk. It sounds like a disk that
wipes the hard drive and returns it to factory condition (which I
already have).

Notice also that they say they are not just continually adding
drivers but continually dropping them. Thus after using this
recovery disk you may find some of your hardware doesn't work any
more.
