There is a saying, "He that dual boots accomplishes little". That's because one is always booting back & forth and nothing gets done.
There is no direct upgrade path from XP to windows 7, so you will need the 'full' version of Windows 7 to install. The setup program has a feature that allows you to delete and/or format any existing partitions, so you can install W7. You will need to backup your data first.
