Ctrl+ works. Thanks for that tip.
Is that for an older version? I tried that first and nothing happens. It
works with FireFox, which I love. Use it all the time but with this it's
not doing anything.

Strange, I works for me in Windows 7 (TB 9.01) and in Linux (TB 9.0).
Me too with the same setup (W7 and TB 9.0.1). I just tried it.

Is there a way to change the font size in T-Bird? For both
reading and writing messages for Usenet. I can't seem to find one
and with my aging eyes I would love to be able to make it larger.
I tried searching for it and all I could seem to find is others
asking the same question.

Additionally, if you find the size of the font in the theme
you're using too small (or you would like it bold, italic, or a
different colour) there's the "Theme Font & Size Changer" extension.

I never tried it in TBird before, but reading this thread, I tried it
yesterday. Ctrl + seems to expand the text in a message, but not on the
main screen of TBird, and in fact the View menu options to do that are
greyed out on the main screen.

Also Ctrl - zooms out and Ctrl 0 restores to standard size, as in other
Windows situations.

OK dammit!! Now I tried that several times yesterday, and nothing. So
just now I tried it again and all of a sudden it is working. The Ctrl. +
and Ctrl. -.
Now I just noticed that when I open a new window to respond it will
not work again. If I open a new message then I can use it. LOL, I often
hate computers.

I finally found it thanks to Alias. It was in the Advanced but there was
3 places to change it. I had tried it but never tried all of them. It's
the last one that finally works, at least in this version. I have no
idea which one this is, I let Mozilla update it whenever it wants too. I
had done a lot of searching and I was finding a lot of people asking the
same question. All the answers were around changing the font colors and
type but nothing to just make it bigger. I had even resorted to using
the magnifier in W-7. It was a PITA though. Now I can see the letters!!!
Looking at the message headers I see:

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:9.0) Gecko/20111222
Thunderbird/9.0.1

So that means you're using Thunderbird v9.0.1 which is the latest
version available.

Doesn't work when I open a new window to reply either. Oh well, maybe
next version.
Hopefully, at least now I can see what the hell I am reading and typing.
It is 100% better now. I can read and respond without having to find a
pair of reading glasses.
Thanks, I had looked a lot for a way to make the font larger and no
place seemed to have a working answer.

I wear my reading glasses round my neck and still have problems finding
them sometimes ;-)

LOL, I tried one of those things and still managed to break a couple
pairs. I finally found the answer. I stopped buying expensive ones.
Found some at Amazon, come 3 pairs for about $8.00. I bought about a
dozen pairs. Now I have them scattered all over and when they get broken
it's no big deal any more.

Seems to work here with 9.01 in the Message Pane, not the header pane.
Never worked in the header pane. You can change the fonts used in the
header pane and the folders pane by changing menu fonts etc in the
system's interface scheme. In Windows, you get to it via right-click
anywhere on the desktop > Personalize.
