Files first in Win 7 Libraries windows?

B

Burma Jones

None of the instructions I've seen about how to do this
actually work for me:

I'd like to display files at the top of the list above folders
if possible.

Has anyone successfully done this and could you please send a
link to a screenshot image showing it?

I've tried:

- creating a new library from scratch and pointing it to just
one folder

- in the list for "Optimize this library", I've tried all 5
types: General Items, Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos

- I have the Library displaying the "Details" view

- in the "Arrange by" dropdown, "Folders" is selected, and it
will not let me select any of the other selections such as
"Date modified", "Tag", "Type", or "Name"

Thank you

The Windows Search service needs to be running for the 'Arrange by' function to work.
(But re-arranging doesn't seem to help with your problem though.)

Starting the Windows Search service did allow "Arrange by" to
function but
as you said, it does not allow me to put files above folders. =(

Not sure what you mean - if you are saying that you are able to
put files on top above folders, then please post your image
showing this.

I should add a clarification to the problem in case it's not
obvious:

This problem of not being able to display files at the top of the
list above folders only applies to folders that contain files
*and* folders. Obviously if there are only files contained in
the Library folder then the problem does not occur.

Sorry, I was not exploring Libraries but a normal folder.

Set your file pane to show details. Click on the name column. If you ere
already sorted ascending by name, that will change it to descending -
and vice versa.

Do it both ways; you will then have your own picture.

That won't work, not on a Library display, only on common folders display.

Ok, well there's something different about our library folders.
Here's my My Documents folder in a Library:

Is the presentation in there controlled by desktop.ini, or
by some other mechanism ?

Example seemingly related to desktop.ini ...

This page has an example of the contents of a desktop.ini

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/224536-desktop-ini-my-desktop.html

"... shell32.dll,-21799"

The presentation on a custom folder, can be controlled by the "-21799"
style number. Your two folders, might have a desktop.ini with a different
value for that.

Just a thought.

Perhaps one of you has attempted to redirect My Documents somewhere, and this
is a side effect.

I don't think it's controlled by a desktop.ini file.
Some of my libraries have no desktop.ini file, some have one and some have two in there.
What is consistent with all my library folders is the name of the library folder in green
text at the top left and the 'Arrange by' drop-down menu on the top right.
