Thanks. I tried both 1.01 and 2. I'd prefer version 2 even though it
will cost $ 10. But I don't know yet as to whether I'm going to use it.

I purchased version 2. At least I can hide the desktop ini files. Hope
this will keep my icons from disappearing.

And, what happens if you _do_ run iconoid (http://www.sillysot.com/ -
yes, really!) or another icon-position rememberer: does it restore the
missing icons, suggesting they'd just moved, or have they entirely
disappeared?

I installed iconoid. During installation all icons were present. None
have gone yet. I also purchased Fences. Now I wait to see as to whether
the icons may disappear again. In that case iconoid may be able to
restore them.

You running any add-ons that interfere with explorer (the desktop)?

Not as far as I know ...
