De-unplug USB device?

Lord help you if you lost a card or someone accidentally misplaced one.
We had a program that we ran once a quarter and we had to make
substantial changes to some of the data input. I learned quick to count
cards before and after.

When I worked at the Army's Quartermaster Center in Petersburg, VA
we had two IBM mainframes. One ran OS, the other ran DOS (Not the
PC kind!) In order to tell the keypunch operators which JCL cards to
punch, we were supposed to write either OS or DOS at the top of our
coding forms. Whenever I submitted a job to run on OS, everything
was fine. When I submitted one to run on DOS, however, I'd get two
decks back from the new typist. It turns out she was Hispanic and thought
the DOS at the top meant we wanted two decks! I don't know what
she thought OS meant!

"Os" is the definite article (masculine plural) in Portuguese.

Which has little to do with the process of typing them...

Anyway, Paul has covered the situation you mention in his reply.

Although I do realize that it is possible that your data cards lacked
that possibility. Which becomes scary...

I've dropped small jobs (300-400 cards) on the floor, never a whole box.
That's how you learn the importance of sequence numbers. Or, the importance
of not dropping them.

If you want comparative misery, try regularly loading info into a computer
via a teletype with paper tape reader. Having a read error, and having to
back up the tape "one record", and attempt a re-read. That'll have you
pining for punch cards, in no time. I only had the occasional "pin hole"
on a punch card. But could never get the techniques down, for using
paper tape. Should I oil it ? Should I clean it ? Can I hit it
with a hammer ? :)

I enjoy your posts and if it were up to me there'd be a cupcake
waiting for you every day just for showing up. :)

I decline to answer. My answer might be more helpful than yours.

It would not be so bad if I replied "No", but if I were to reply
"Yes", it could get messy.

Unless I wait until tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Since your answer was on a different day, you actually had license to
do anything. Yes, *anything* :)

Except break the law of the excluded middle...

Including, it would seem, missing that I was replying to a post
from another day. It was Monday, I was worrying about my income tax
return (due April 30 here in Canada), other lame excuse. Check one or
more.
Except break the law of the excluded middle...
