There's a lot in what you say, Ken. As a longtime Usenet user, I
hope people will gradually discover the truth and start posting again
through real news servers.

I'm with you entirely regarding hope. But regarding likelihood, I'm
afraid that we're out of luck.

In the meantime, I will try to counter the falsehood that Microsoft
can "close a newsgroup".

It is, of course, *literally* a falsehood. But the point I was making
is that they can (and already have in many of the newsgroups) get the
number of posts so close to zero that, from a practical standpoint,
they can get the newsgroup to no longer exist.

Even people like me, who greatly prefer newsgroups to web-based
forums, will unsubscribe from a newsgroup that I used to answer
question in if there are hardly any questions any more.

There are *thousands* of (non-Microsoft) newsgroups out there that
still "exist," but get no messages at all (or hardly any) so that,
from a practical standpoint, no longer exist.

Microsoft will get its way here, I'm sorry to say.

Not even a microsoft.public group. Not even under discussion in this
thread.
I was replying to the poster below (Have you missed the point that each
post is in this newsgroup, alt.windows7 General ?)

" If you don't think Microsoft has any control, post a bunch of crap like
has just been posted here".

....did you miss "like" has been...? The subject was microsoft.public groups,
not /this/ group.
