Control Startup Programs

Thanks Char.

I entered 'Start Button' in 'Windows Help and Support' and there
were 'Best 30 results for Start Button.'
Why did you do that?

Did you read any of the results?

What is prog1 ?
It's a secret, and he said it lives at C:\prog files\blah blah.

I'm guessing the whole "how to ask a good question" thing once again
went whizzing over his head.

How many start buttons are there in Win 7?

Yes, I read the most likely ones.

In 3 out of 3 reports of its occurence, it was described as a threat,
connected with a good dozen different malware attacks.
I'm assuming prog1 is an alias for a real program, as Loony says he re-installed it :

"I dnloaded and ran WhatInStartup and didn't get much info.
The prog1 I was looking for was missing. I searched for it and had to
reinstall it."

So it is unlikely to be malware.

It's a shortcut for a program name - could be any program.
What is the name of the program that you want to stop from starting ?

In the Options menu there is a setting to 'Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries'.
I always use that setting to avoid disasters!
I'm curious to know what entries might be that _are_ Windows but are
_not_ Microsoft.

Guess it depends what you mean by "Windows". If you mean entries which
appear in the Windows folder, well, there can be quite a few which are
not Microsoft (I have Adobe, Macromedia, and Samsung folders within the
Windows folder and I doubt they came from Microsoft). Also, won't some
*.dll files not come from Microsoft?

Irwell

Hello again Irwell,

I have the WhatInStartup list of 21 progs including prog1.
I have gone through the File, Edit, View, Options and I can't find any
way of preventing prog1 from starting with the computer. My aim is to
use this prog only when I need to.

TIA :)
You have the list of the programs, highlight the particular
program you do not wish to Start, then go to File, under the
drop down list click on Disable Selected Items.

None. But there is Microsoft software that is not Windows, Microsoft Office for example.

Well initially, I was confident you were speaking of programs
that appear in the system tray next to the clock that you want
to stop from starting at boot time.

But then, after reading the thread...maybe you were talking
about programs started by superfetch that are started for you
prior to you wanting the use them.

If it was the former, with programs that put an icon in the
system tray, yes you can disable things using msconfig, or
editing the run section of the registry, but the first place
to look is the programs options/preferences, as most have a
setting to "Start with Windows" which can be unchecked.

*Then* you can disable others with msconfig or registry edits,
or autoruns, or (some other startup utility).

Well, how about that????? My Prog1 does not start up now with a
computer that is starting up. 3 Cheers. Prog1 is now very happy and so
am I.

Thanks again Irwell :)

I don't think it even existed. I'm guessing Valorie has morphed into Loony.
I considered that. I don't think they're the same person, but they
sure are two peas in a pod!

That (None) was my feeling, and thus that 'Hide Microsoft and Windows
Entries' could have been just 'Hide Microsoft Entries'.But at least one poster in this thread has suggested that there might be
Windows entries that _aren't_ Microsoft, from third-party sources.

If it is true, then that only raises my admiration him/her/it/them.

presentation things) is very different.

And two (Dave-UK and I) have suggested that it's the other way around -
Microsoft but not Windows.

Dave-UK gave a valid example...
